One of the hallmarks of the 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (DCC) is adaptability. When working with very small primates and other small species, traditional dental instrumentation isn’t always practical. Sometimes, innovation becomes a necessity.⁣
⁣
What you see here is that innovation in action. Using a 22-gauge needle as a modified periosteal and winged elevator, we are able to delicately luxate and extract canines, premolars, and, at times, molars of species such as marmosets and tamarins.⁣
⁣
These procedures require precision, patience, and a gentle touch. By applying careful, controlled force, we strive to maintain soft tissue integrity while minimizing trauma to these incredibly small patients. Every extraction is then confirmed with dental radiography to ensure complete removal and the highest standard of care.⁣
⁣
This is one of the many ways the DCC adapts human and veterinary dental principles to meet the unique challenges of wildlife and conservation medicine. Sometimes, advancing care isn’t about having the perfect instrument—it’s about understanding the principles, respecting the patient, and finding innovative solutions that improve outcomes.⁣
⁣

This mission was one for the record books. Our team treated an 𝘂𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝟱𝟳 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀, including a variety of 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝘀, 𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀, providing comprehensive oral health care and treatment.⁣

Here at the 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (DCC), we like to think of ourselves as conductors.⁣

Our stage this past weekend was , and this photograph captures something much greater than a mission—it captures an orchestra. Each member brings a unique skill set, experience, and perspective, all working together to create something extraordinary.⁣

This past weekend , the 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (DCC) took hands-on learning to a whole new level.⁣

One of the core principles of the Dental Coalition for Conservation (DCC) is education. We believe that teaching advanced dental modalities and sharing knowledge is essential to improving animal welfare and expanding access to quality care around the world.⁣
⁣
True to that mission, we are excited to welcome Dr. Rachelle Fisher, Dr. Katie Divine, and Dr. Samantha DeRidder as they join us this weekend .⁣

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝗿. 𝗥𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗿⁣

Rachelle is originally from Pierce, Nebraska, and graduated from the University of Wyoming in 2019 with a B.S. in Animal and Veterinary Science. She earned her D.V.M. in 2023 through the cooperative program between the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Professional Program in Veterinary Medicine and Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2025, she began a residency in Dentistry and Oral Surgery through the American Veterinary Dental College at NDOSA.⁣

Dr. Katherine “Katie” Divine is a board-certified endodontist and owner of a private practice in Rochester, Minnesota. She completed her specialty training and Master of Science degree at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry and serves in numerous leadership roles within the American Association of Endodontists, the Foundation for Endodontics, and the International Association of Dental Traumatology.⁣

𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗗𝗿. 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗵𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝗥𝗶𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗿⁣
⁣
Originally from Wisconsin, Dr. Samantha DeRidder is a dentist practicing in Northern California with a deep appreciation for community service, conservation, and the natural world. She majored in Spanish with a minor in Psychology before earning her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Marquette University and completing a General Practice Residency at the University of Utah.⁣

We are honored to share our knowledge, learn from one another, and continue building a community dedicated to advancing veterinary and dental care for animals in need.⁣

Representing the 𝗗𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (DCC) abroad is board member Dr. Roberto Fecchio (.fecchio.wilddoctor), currently in South Africa working alongside conservation partners, .

During this mission, Dr. Fecchio has been involved in multiple aspects of wildlife care and conservation efforts, including:⁣

This work highlights the true spirit of 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻—bringing together veterinary medicine, conservation, and hands-on fieldwork in support of wildlife and the ecosystems they inhabit.⁣

It is truly inspiring to witness the important work being carried out there, and the DCC is deeply thankful for the opportunity to be represented in these meaningful conservation efforts.⁣
