Isensee Foundation for Safe Police Response

Isensee Foundation for Safe Police Response To promote and facilitate safe responses to mental health crises by and for all concerned. On April 7, 2013 Sean D. No one else was injured at the scene.

Isensee (resident of Lakes of Austin Park and son of Debbie and Ted Isensee) was shot and killed by a Sugar Police officer who was responding along with many other officers to a call for help regarding a mental health crisis. The facts of the case have not all come to light. However, it is clear that the results could have been much better. If things had been handled differently, Sean could be ali

ve today. In response to his death his family and other concerned citizens are calling for an independent investigation into the events and root causes leading to his death. In addition, his family and friends have formed the Isensee Foundation for Safe Police Response. The mission of the foundation is to “provide law enforcement and professionals with training, techniques and equipment that will increase their ability to de-escalate mental health crises.”

The foundation will focus initially on efforts to increase the ability of law enforcement and professionals in Sugar Land to respond safely and effectively to mental health crises. We have already learned that Sugar Land does not have sufficient training and resources to handle mental health crises safely. In contrast, Houston does have much better resources. As a result, in situations such as we and Sean faced on April 7, we probably would have been much safer if we were in Houston than in Sugar Land. We believe Sugar Land needs to do much better than it has in dealing with mental health crises.

A few days my son, Austin, signed up himself, his daughter Miss G, and me for a 5k race. The event was to raise funds for a nonprofit honoring an HPD helicopter officer who died in a helicopter crash on duty a few years ago. It was the first year of the race in Cypress , Texas. There were 76 participants in the race (an auspicious number for year 250 for the USA) . It was held at an 876 acre new park in Cypress named "John Paul Landing" after Pope Paul. It's a great park for walking, running, fishing, etc.
My goals for the race were: 1) show up 2) finish 3) not come in last. I met all three goals. The bonus (which, truth be told, I thought would be fun to accomplish some time in my life) was that I came in first in my age group, males over 75! Before you get too impressed, it was not that hard. I was the only one in that category! Just another reminder that showing up is 80% (and sometimes 100%) of the job. I hope this little example may inspire you to do something you want to do, but might think you are tool old or too something to tackle.
As you can see from the video, I was no speed demon. My time was 41:14 for the 5k. I ran most of the way but did take some breaks where I just walked quickly. It does inspire me to run more often so next time I can beat that pace. Running with Austin and Miss G was another big reward for the day. Supporting a local nonprofit was another bonus. I think next year's attendance will be much bigger so my chance of a repeat win may not be in the cards

One of the organizations we partner with is Compassionate Houston. Their mission is to promote and develop a culture of compassion in the Houston area. This week they are coordinating "Compassion Week" which offers many free in-person and virtual events in our area that are put in by different nonprofits. See details at www.https://www.compassionatehouston.org/cw2025

All are invited, adults and children. It's a great way to learn about and experience what various nonprofit organizations in the Houston area offer around the theme of compassion. Have fun and meet wonderful people in our area who promote and live a culture of compassion. Compassion is not tied to any religion, group, or philosophy. No one owns it and all can practice it.

A new Texas law changes how law enforcement can respond to some mentally ill people. ABC 13 reporter Jessica Willey recently interviewed me (Ted Isensee) and others about whether we supported the bill or not.

Senate Bill 1164 allows officers to detain someone experiencing a mental health crisis, even if they pose no immediate threat, but not everyone sees the law as progress.

https://www.namiwalks.org/participant/Ted-Isensee I am raising funds to support mental health initiatives. How? By supporting NAMI's annual walk in Houston this Saturday May 17. Please help us raise funds through walking or just donating what you can. You can literally help save lives by doing so.

Board members of our Isensee Fdn for Safe Police Response will be attending the Texas CIT (Crisis Intervention Training) conference in San Marcos in April. I will be speaking there this year and we will also have an exhibit booth.

If you would like to support our work there and elsewhere you can make a donation at www.safepoliceresponse.org/donate and/or buy a copy of my book "From Grief to Advocacy" on Amazon. All proceeds go to our foundation and its mission.

Thanks for anything you can do, including sharing this post.
