Over the top thrilled to be revamping Lame Duck Farm!! And so thrilled you've jumped back in this journey with me, or perhaps discovering it for the first time.
You may have notice the change in Logo...of course the location change is evident and obvious. But, the duck logo change is significant. Unlike the last duck used as a logo, which was just a public clip art design, our new silhouette is actually Dillard, the Duck who inspired the name. Dillard had many special needs and I kept him with me while I was able to meet those needs, and then passed him on (along with the rest of the flock) when I returned to KY. We knew from the start that Dillard would require care they neither I, or his new care giver could provide, so the decision was eventually made to place him on a farm that took special needs animals so he could be adequately taken care of and live his best life with the least struggles.
Lame Duck Farm went from nearly 8 acres in Florida to an in-town back yard flock, drastically limiting the amount of chickens, ducks, and geese I can have...but the mission behind it all remains the same.
All eggs produced will go to address food insecurities in the local community. This may be through direct donation of eggs to food distribution centers, selling of eggs to produce revenue to purchase other needed perishables, or direct emergency relief to help feed a community or family.
Counterintuitive to the name, I will be starting with hens. I've selected to focus on one specific breed, which are known for their outstanding egg production, affectionate and social personalities, and parenting skills. The chicks have been ordered and due to arrive the last week of May. I've also ordered a rooster of the same breed, but since he can't live in my yard, he will be making frequent congical visits for the sale of fertilized eggs, or pure breed chicks.
Once the hens are settled, a pair or trio of ducks will be added (if you are a baker; you understand the supremity of baking with duck eggs), then a pair or trio of geese will be added to complete the flock, and add extra protection.
While waiting on the arrival of the chicks, a coop has been ordered and will be delivered in 7-10 days. A neighbor generously donated a 10x10 run to attach. The same neighbor also contributed a goose shelter (once a dig house), and I've also secured a duck shelter.
I'd you happen to have a 10x10 dog run you want to rid your property of, please reach out and see if we can work towards a win-win. I'll also be looking for several plastic pools
As much as I'm so excited for this to come together, I also know Tucker will be doing what he loves best...tending to, and protecting his, flock. He's never been a better or happier dog than when he had the job of keeping everyone safe. Not one of the flock was ever lost to a predator, but many predators didn't survive Tucker
Please follow along, and invite others to join us on our rebuild process.
