Breckinridge County remains on the edge of Severe Drought conditions, and it doesn’t take much for dry grass, brush, or timber to ignite and spread quickly. Even with occasional rain chances, fuels across the county remain very dry.

As temperatures start to rise and vegetation dries out, residents are encouraged to use extra caution with anything that could start a fire.

🔥 Fire Safety Tips During Dry Conditions:
• Avoid outdoor burning whenever possible
• Never leave campfires or burn barrels unattended
• Do not toss ci******es from vehicles or into dry grass
• Keep chains, trailer safety chains, and equipment from dragging on roadways and creating sparks
• Use caution when mowing or operating equipment in dry grass during the heat of the day
• Keep water sources or extinguishers nearby when working outdoors

Farmers and equipment operators should also regularly check bearings, brakes, and machinery for overheating or sparks during field work.

If you see smoke or fire that appears uncontrolled, report it immediately by calling 911.

A single spark can quickly become a large wildfire under current conditions. Staying alert and using common-sense precautions helps protect homes, farms, timber, and first responders across Breckinridge County.

⚠️ Special Weather Statement – Elevated Fire Danger Today ⚠️

Warm temperatures, low humidity, gusty southwest winds, and ongoing dry conditions are creating elevated fire risk across the County this afternoon.

• Wind gusts: 20–25 mph
• Low Relative Humidity
• Dry fuels remain highly receptive to ignition

These conditions make it easy for fires to start and spread quickly. Even small burns can get out of control.

🔥 Avoid all outdoor burning today.
🔥 Use extreme caution with anything that could spark a fire.

A potential scam targeting residents has been brought to our attention, involving an individual claiming to be with the fire department attempting to solicit money. A resident appropriately declined to provide information and ended the call. Should you receive a similar call, please do not engage and promptly report it to the Breckinridge County Sheriff's Office. The fire department will never solicit money or request personal information via telephone.
