The 1860 Red School House on the Fair Grounds is part of the Polk County Historical Society, whose members plan exhibits each year at the fair.
This year we are looking for ideas to help celebrate the 250th birthday of the USA.
Many of the visitors are children. Can you help us think of some activities for kids that incorporate the Colonial period? We would love to have some volunteers to work with the kids to help them learn about what life was like 250 years ago.
We do plan to have the feathers again for drawing and writing, including signing the Declaration of Independence.

Thanks!

The grandstand concrete work is completed and the landscaping to begin with black dirt and grass seeded or maybe sod soon. The folks were working on the electrical wiring in the roof - maybe lights? More photos from today, May 12th 2026.
It doesn't look like there are any cracks in the seating where coins or wallets will slip through for kids hunting underneath. The old grandstand had storage built in underneath - wonder if the new one will make use of it.

Photos from the almost completed new grandstand. Some of the landscaping is ongoing and it looks like just one or two more roofing sheets left.
We climbed up the stairs and tried sitting on the bleachers. Definitely a soft cushion would be nice! Maybe the Fair Society can have some made and sell them to help pay for the grandstand.
Artificial Intelligence program ChatGPT made a few suggested seat cushion designs.

The roof is half on the new grandstand; the railings up and the handicap ramp on.

The 1886 Polk County Fair Grounds were bought from Amos Flint, the area known as "Flint's Field." In 1886, the new Fair Society leased 40 acres from Flint, later buying it. Flint had purchased several hundred acres in 1857 and farmed the land where the Fair Grounds are located.
We wondered who Amos was and found this paragraph written by Harry Baker in Letters to Clarence (his brother).
"Another Easterner who interested me greatly was a State-of-Maine bachelor who lived atop the Weymouth Hill, - Amos Flint. He had bought various parcels of real estate when he first came here in the fifties, a number of which had small houses which he rented and on the first day of each month he appeared at the doors, - a fine looking, white-bearded, old man, quite distinguished in appearance, - and would ask in his most courteous manner, “Good morning! Would you like to see me today?” Hoping, of course, to collect the rent. If answered in the negative, he would reply suavely, “Goodby! I will call again a week hence!” And so by “pleasant persistency” he doubtless collected rent otherwise uncollectible. Upon his death about 1894, his State-of-Maine heirs sold his properties here to whatever they would bring and the money they brought went back whence it had come."
We also found a clipping mentioning him buying bricks from the Dombrock brick factory.

The new grandstand has the seats installed and probably soon will have a roof.

Another 4-H photo from the County Fair. This time the Sunnyside 4H club that appear to have been located near the Sunnyside school a few miles east of Clear Lake. The first is the booth display from 1952 that won a red ribbon. The second is the club on 1951 in the parade in front of the grandstand. The booths were setup in the original 4H building, now used for Cloverbud entries.
Do you remember doing 4H booths? Another activity was "window displays." We include the press release from the Deer Lake Happy Lakers 4H club mentioning their window display. It includes names like Joe Unbehaun, Butch Mettler, Bryan Jackson, Laurie Huber, Sandy McKenzie and others from that area. Can you finish the list of names?

In a cooperative project between the Sterling Eureka and Laketown Historical Society Obsolete Media Laboratory and the Polk County Museum, several boxes of 1947-57 4-H slides are being digitized.
A few include photos of the county fair in around 1950.
