The Musky Marathon is in the books and if you missed it, you missed out. Some of the finest anglers, and even better people, set up to call Tionesta and the surrounding areas home for the weekend in hopes of taking home this crown jewel. Competitors were spread out amongst the in-bounds waters from Tionesta Lake north to the upper reaches of the Allegheny River. The big unknown going in was the potentially severe weather and how it would affect the fish as well as the fishing strategies. While it was extreme, it didn't turn out to last as long or be the disaster it was forecasted to be. It did, however, play a huge factor in the overall weekend bite.
There wasn't any action in the opening hours of the marathon, but just before the storm rolled in, the fish started to munch. Raymond Flower and Dave Alexander Jr. opened up the action with a 31" river musky. Almost a half hour later, Christopher Petro and Bobby Kish landed the tourney lunker with a 47.75", and just before the storm rolled in, Ernie Dykins landed a 31.5" fishing solo. Everyone was forced off the water for a good portion of the afternoon.
When fishing resumed, the fish took a couple hours to reset, and then were ready to chew. The magical stretch of the evening occurred around 7:15 when 3 fish were landed within 10 minutes of each other. Kish and Petro secured the win with a 40.25". Minutes later, Matthew Klebacha and Larry Marie landed a 36.5" and within sight of them, Matt Dombrosky netted a 40.75" at the same time! Dombrosky would close out the scoring for Saturday with a 38.5" just over an hour after his first.
Sunday was much warmer, and the action was extremely slow. Just as the sun came up, Blaine Benner and Dave Commons landed the only fish of the day with a 43.5" which was enough to move them onto the podium.
Results:
1st- Bobby Kish and Chris Petro
2nd- Matt Dombrosky
3rd- Dave Commons and Blaine Benner
Lunker- Petro and Kish- 47.75"
8 fish landed. 38.75" average length.
