Community members gathered on Monday, April 20, at the Pender County Library for a special evening of recognition and reflection following the success of this year’s North Carolina First in Freedom Festival.
A highlight of the North Carolina First in Freedom Festival was the visit of internationally acclaimed author Diana Gabaldon, whose participation drew widespread attention and helped shine a national spotlight on Pender County’s rich historical significance and cultural heritage. Gabaldon participated in many commemorative events as part of the NC First in Freedom Festival and the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge.
The evening offered a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the festival’s success, recognize the contributions of local nonprofit organizations, and give back. Through their dedication, partnership, and community spirit, these organizations played a key role in bringing the festival’s events to life and strengthening connections throughout the county and beyond.
As part of the celebration, donations from the North Carolina First in Freedom Festival event, totaling $45,000.00, were proudly presented to several outstanding nonprofit partners, including the Friends of the Pender County Library, the Pender Arts Council, the Scottish Society of Wilmington, and the Moores Creek Battleground Association.
Each of these organizations plays a vital role in preserving local history, enriching the cultural landscape, and fostering a strong sense of community pride across the region.
