Why Braille Matters: Lessons from Ethan’s Story
Access Braille President, Sudha Rajagopalan, shares:
One moment from our recent fundraiser has stayed with me.
When Ethan Fong spoke, he shared something many of us can relate to.
As a child, he did not want to learn braille.
It felt difficult, unfamiliar, and unnecessary.
But his parents stayed with it.
Gently and consistently, they encouraged him to continue.
Years later, he sees it very differently.
Braille became the foundation of his learning — helping him read, write, and think independently.
And that same foundation led him to win the regional Braille Challenge.
What once felt like a struggle became a strength.
His story is a reminder that children don’t always recognize the value of something in the moment. But with the right support, they grow into it.
This is where parents, teachers, and communities play such an important role — holding the belief when the child cannot yet see it.
Braille is not just about reading.
It is about confidence.
It is about independence.
It is about giving a child the tools to shape their own future.
And sometimes, it begins with someone else believing in that future first.
