Quahog Bay Conservancy

Quahog Bay Conservancy Quahog Bay Conservancy is a nonprofit organization located in Harpswell, ME, founded in 2014.

Staff collect water samples weekly at seven established monitoring stations throughout the Bay, which are screened for total coliforms (sewage contamination). Sampling results are tracked and analyzed for patterns based on location, tidal, run-off, or other adverse conditions. Data from the monitoring will be used to help identify ‘hot spot’ problem areas. QBC is working in concert with other loca

l groups with an interest in improving the environmental health of the Bay. A QBC representative is already working with organizations such as the Harpswell Conservation Commission, the Casco Bay Estuary Partnership, and the New Meadows Watershed Partnership to collaborate on habitat issues that overlap in the region.

Show us your mussels! Join Quahog Bay Conservancy, GMRI and several partner organizations for a mussel bed mapping extravaganza event that spans the coast of Maine and New Hampshire! Help us observe where mussels are (and importantly where they aren’t) during an extreme low tide on June 18. While in the field collecting observations, you’ll also be learning about blue mussel beds, local ecosystems, and ongoing research. The data you collect will be put to use in the Mussel Bed Mapping Community Science Project.

Before joining us in person, we encourage you to attend our webinar on Thursday, June 11 at 12 PM to learn about the basics of blue mussels, the community science project your data will be contributing to, and how to participate.

In-person group meet-ups will be happening at multiple sites across Southern Maine and New Hampshire. Or you can participate independently at a different site! When registering, please select where you plan to make observations. Fieldwork will take place in the intertidal zone, so be prepared to walk along mudflats. QBC is the host for the Harpswell Town Office location and we hope to see you there! 💪

Happy first day to our 2026 summer interns!

Today, our interns were introduced to the lab, participated in boat safety training, and began learning about the work that supports our conservation mission.

We are excited to have them on board and look forward to the season ahead. 🌊🦪

From the court to the classroom, Elisabeth Kelly tackled everything freshman year threw at her with the support of our Working Waterfront Science Scholarship. As a student athlete, focus and dedication are everything, and this scholarship helped her excel at Husson University throughout her first year.

The Working Waterfront Science Scholarship is awarded to graduating seniors pursuing studies that align with QBC’s mission, including engineering, technical fields, science, and related disciplines.

Applications for the 2026 scholarship close Saturday! To apply, check out the application materials in our bio and contact [email protected] with any questions.

We’re thrilled to highlight our growing partnership with Wolfe’s Neck Farm!

Recently, QBC had the opportunity to provide our Snow Island Oysters for two incredible events on the farm, showcasing our freshly harvested oysters to guests and patrons of Wolfe’s Neck. Last month, we supplied oysters for their Oyster Shucking and Cooking Class, and just last Thursday, we joined their Farm to Table Sponsor Dinner, where we shucked oysters fresh for attendees throughout the evening.

Wolfe’s Neck Farm has been a valued partner of ours for years. Every summer, we team up to supply them with crushed green crabs for their composting initiatives. It’s a full-circle collaboration rooted in local sustainability and supporting agriculture.

We’re excited to continue expanding this partnership and look forward to many more opportunities to work closely together in the future!🦪🧑🏻‍🌾
