Road Trip to Ohio for the Dayton Heritage Basketry Guild Fall Weave 🧺🍂
🧺🚗 A road trip to Ohio for a wonderful basketry event!

North Georgia Basketry recently traveled to Ohio to visit the Dayton Heritage Basketry Guild Fall Weave, and it was well worth the trip.

From the drive through the Ohio countryside to walking into a room filled with baskets, supplies, teachers, and weavers, this was a wonderful reminder of what makes the basketry community so special.

The event brought together great people, wonderful teachers, beautiful baskets, and plenty of inspiration. We enjoyed seeing the variety of projects being created, visiting with fellow basket makers, and watching experienced teachers share their knowledge and techniques.

One of the best parts of attending basketry events around the country is meeting the people behind the craft. There is something special about sitting around a table with other weavers, learning something new, exchanging ideas, and leaving with both a finished basket and new friendships.

A big thank-you to the Dayton Heritage Basketry Guild and everyone who helped make the Fall Weave such a welcoming and enjoyable event.

The Heritage Basketry Guild is hosting the 2026 annual Fall Basket Weaving Retreat this week/weekend! September 10th - 12th
In Fairborn, Ohio.
A variety of classes from beginner to advanced are being taught by a group of excellent, creative teachers. Several teachers offered their supplies and weaving kits for purchase. We always love getting supplies without the shipping. Heritage also offered T-shirts and sweatshirts for purchase. Ginny Shepherd and I were fortunate to take Mary Prices newest design “Queens Cup”

BASKET WEAVERS — HAVE YOU TRIED GOURD ART? 🧺

If you enjoy basket weaving, gourding may be a natural next step in your creative journey.

Basket makers and gourd artists have more in common than you might think. Artists are combining dried gourds with reed, pine needles, leather, waxed linen, beads and other natural materials to create beautiful baskets, bowls, vessels and decorative pieces.

Instead of weaving an entire basket, the gourd becomes part of the structure — providing a natural base for weaving, coiling, netting and decorative rims.

🧺 WHERE BASKETRY MEETS GOURD ART

One great example is the Mountain Gourd Gathering in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

The 14th Annual Mountain Gourd Gathering was held August 7–9, 2026, at the Etowah Lion's Club. The three-day event brought together instructors, students and vendors for hands-on gourd classes covering a wide variety of techniques.

What really caught our attention at North Georgia Basketry was how many of the projects crossed directly into the basketry world.

Participants could learn:

🧺 Mini Bowl and Basket — weaving directly onto prepared gourds.

🌿 Stamp, Doodle and Coil — decorating a gourd and finishing it with a coiled rim using round basket reed.

🪡 Knotless Netting — creating netting down the gourd and finishing it with an endless-wave rim using waxed linen and suede leather.

🌲 Pine Needle Coiling — learning the basic techniques of wrapped centers and coiling with longleaf pine needles and artificial sinew.

🟤 Braided Leather Rims — adding a woven-looking leather rim to a gourd bowl.

Artists also explored woodburning, carving, dyes, painting, sculpture, lamps and mixed-media techniques. The event even included a gourd vendor offering gourds, dyes, burners, cutters, patterns and other supplies.

The recently completed Tennessee Basketry Association Convention brought basketmakers together in Cookeville, Tennessee, for several memorable days of creativity, learning, and fellowship.

The friendly hosts made everyone feel welcome, while the excellent basket-weaving teachers shared new techniques, encouraged students, and helped weavers complete an impressive variety of baskets. From busy classrooms and colorful projects to vendors and time spent reconnecting with friends, the convention highlighted what makes the basketry community so special.

Cookeville is also an ideal destination for combining basket weaving and waterfalls. Visitors can explore the natural beauty of Tennessee’s Upper Cumberland region, including nearby Burgess Falls, Cummins Falls, and Fall Creek Falls.
