Thank you Mashburn Elementary and Sandy Lippe! Mashburn is the first school in Forsyth County where every student has been educated about the environmental impact of litter. Every litter bit matters!

Did you know that today is National Learn about Composting Day?

The Georgia Recycling Coalition's Georgia Backyard Composting Brochure is a great and simple way to learn more about composting including how to build a backyard compost bin, what items can go in the bin, and why composting is important to soil health. Read all about it here!

What’s better than a devoted volunteer who picks up litter? A devoted volunteer who saves, cleans, and reuses what he finds!

One of our star volunteers Andy Bushelman does just that. This umbrella and chairs on his patio were found during one of our Meet Up and Clean Up Events. And instead of it going to the landfill with the rest of our litter hauls, Andy rescued and rehabilitated it. Bravo Andy! And to everyone who is choosing to reuse things instead of tossing them!

In celebration of National Flip-Flop Day, why not purchase a new pair of eco-friendly flip flops to wear this summer? Try looking for shoes made from recovered materials (e.g., recycled plastic, scrap tires or even used wine corks) and products that are recyclable at the end of their life.

Need suggestions? Check out this curated list of 10 Sustainable Brands Crafting Flip-Flops from SustainablyChic™ .

Some brands offer take-back programs to recycle flip flops. When replacing an old pair of shoes, check the company's website to see if they offer recycling for shoes. Please don't place flip-flops in your recycling cart or in the plastics bin at the County Recycling Centers.

Traveling this weekend? Recycling varies by community, so check locally to see what items are recyclable at your destination.

Going by car? Pack a tote bag to collect recyclables in case recycling containers aren't available. When you return home from vacation, empty the items from the tote bag into your recycling bin.

Enjoy and stay safe!

On this last day of school, we wanted to express our gratitude to all of the teachers, administrators, other staff, and students who have participated in KFCB school programs or events or created your own green initiatives. From beautifying school grounds to picking up litter; from increasing recycling to creating school gardens; and from marking storm drains to implementing food waste programs, every year our schools do amazing things to help create a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Forsyth County.

Pictured are the 4th and 5th grade students of Brookwood’s Enviro Cats team who marked all the storm drains at the school to educate others on the importance of water quality in our community.

Thank you all again and have a wonderful summer!

Did you know that it’s Public Works Week? This year’s theme “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community” acknowledges that the roots of service run deep in public works. And that service comes from those you see (such as our County Recycling Center Attendants) and those you don’t see such as our driver Chris Funderburg pictured here who hauls the recycling to the sorting centers.

Let’s all take a moment to say thank you to all of the hard working folks who make our lives easier, including those who operate “under the radar”.
