We really struggled with making a weather call yesterday. Our food banks are EMPTY but volunteer safety has to be the priority. We didn't cancel the collection day, but notified all volunteers to participate at their own discretion and not get on the road if they were feeling unsafe.
As we drove to the lodge it was windy, rain was pouring, trees were down, and 400 was closed in both directions. We felt a huge sense of dread and wondered if we had made the right decision.
Then slowly but surely, volunteers started to trickle in. They were wet. They were windblown. But they were smiling and had carloads FULL of food! Regret quickly turned to relief and our volunteers even mentioned how palpable the comradery felt yesterday.
The USPS didn't run but our army of volunteers did! We are in awe and have so much respect for the tenacity and dedication of those who make Food for Thought possible, and are grateful to be a part of a community that is so passionate about battling food insecurity. Thank you is all we have and simply not enough.
We know we missed some houses. Please donate those items to a food bank of your choice, hold onto your Orange Bag for the December pickup, and take care of yourselves.
