Not every pursuit or chase ends the way we would like. For this Felony Friday, we’re going to give an example of that. Early yesterday morning, just after 1:00am, Deputy First Class (DFC) Roberts of our H.E.A.T. unit was sitting off the side of GA-400 north bound, when a white BMW SUV came by at a high rate of speed. DFC Roberts’ laser clocked the vehicle traveling 98mph in a 55mph zone. DFC Roberts pulled out in an attempt to pursue the vehicle for speeding. After turning on his emergency equipment (blue lights & siren), the driver increased his speed, clocking in at 146mph.
After a short pursuit and the driver exiting GA-400 at Bald Ridge Marina Rd, deputies (multiple involved now) cancelled the pursuit. Deputies are trained to mentally manage a number of variables, including community safety, surroundings, location and road conditions, etc. So, there it is. We got beat and lost the violator…
But wait… There’s more??? Heck yes there is!
The violator didn’t get pulled over for his misdemeanor crime. He upgraded to a felony charge. Why else would we be talking about it on the Felony Friday post!?
We have dash cameras on our cars. We have access to GDOT (Georgia Department of Transportation) cameras through our new Real Time Crime Center (RTCC). Oh yeah, we have a Real Time Crime Center too! It didn’t take long for a deputy to pull the registered owner of the BMW, locate the car, and knock on the hotel door. After a brief discussion with the registered owner, it was found that his 23-year-old nephew was the driver and had just returned to the room from a late-night drive. After having to crawl out of bed with "sleepy eyes", pretending to be asleep, you sir have earned yourself an all-inclusive “Go straight to jail, do not pass ‘Go’, & do not collect $200” card. Welcome to the world-renowned Freeman Hotel, and welcome to Forsyth County!
For those wondering, Deputy First Class Sam Roberts was able to put his handcuffs on the violator and transport him to the jail. Let this be a message to all of those that wish to run in Forsyth County: If you are in that much of a hurry, you can rest assured, we make house calls. Have a great day & !
