Throughout the remainder of March the Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization will fly the Maryland flag at their Headquarters 400 S. Allegany St. Cumberland. In honor of March 25 being Maryland Day. This is the day in 1634 that the Ark and Dove landed on the shores of Maryland. The CHCO points out that Maryland was one of the original thirteen colonies, which ties into America's 250th anniversary history this year. The flag was the coat of arms from the Calvert and Crossland founding families. The flag promoted the Christian history and heritage of the colony. After the Civil War it became a symbol of reconcilation for Marylanders, most who fought for the South. Md. Confederate Soldiers wore the botany cross on their uniforms. Pictured displaying the flag are Cumberland Historic Cemetery Organization members Blaine Davis and Peggy Keene. To learn more visit www.chco.org
