🐾 A BIG UPDATE: NEW FACES, A HARD GOODBYE & 24 CATS FIXED 🐾
There has been A LOT happening behind the scenes lately, so it’s time for an update!
First, meet our three newest residents. And in true MMC fashion, none of them came to us with a simple little checklist. 😂
🐱 WACKY JACK
Wacky Jack came to us from a neighboring county shelter and needed an immediate rescue pull.
This goofy, incredibly lovable guy has a head tilt, double ear infections, and needs a full-mouth extraction. The good news is we were able to get one big thing checked off his list yesterday. Jack was neutered during our clinic!
Now we’ll continue treating those ears and get his dental care scheduled so this sweet guy can finally start feeling his best.
🐱 STAR
Star is another head-tilt kitty who joined the MMC crew. She has an ear infection, needs polyps removed from her ears, and also needs several teeth extracted.
She has a little medical journey ahead of her, but she is exactly where she needs to be while we get everything taken care of.
🐱 PEACHES
Sweet Peaches came to us with rodent ulcers and also needs dental work and teeth extracted.
So yes, if you’re keeping count, we somehow managed to welcome THREE new cats who all need dental work. Apparently teeth are our theme this month. 😹
🌈 AND THEN CAME THE PART OF RESCUE WE WISH WE NEVER HAD TO SHARE.
Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to sweet Jupiter yesterday morning.
Jupiter was the little orange kitten we helped pull from the Mineral County Pound along with his sister, Laverne. He was already facing an incredibly difficult road and needed both of his eyes removed.
Yesterday, Jupiter was suspected of having a diaphragmatic hernia. Ultimately, the kindest decision we could make for him was to let him go peacefully and humanely.
But Jupiter’s story is NOT just about how it ended.
His foster mom, Tonya, saved his life and Laverne’s life by opening her home to them when they needed somewhere to go. Without a foster stepping up, they were facing euthanasia at the pound. Tonya gave Jupiter love, comfort, safety, and a home. She cared for him through everything and loved him so much that she was already planning on becoming a foster fail.
Jupiter may not have gotten the long life we wanted for him, but he knew what it felt like to be loved.
And for that, we are incredibly thankful.
Thank you, Tonya, for loving him, fighting for him, and giving him the life he deserved while he was here. ❤️
🎉NOW FOR SOME REALLY GOOD NEWS!
Yesterday was also CLINIC DAY!
24 CATS WERE SPAYED OR NEUTERED! 🎉
We held another clinic at the Allegany County Animal Shelter, and we cannot thank everyone enough who helped make it happen.
These clinic days require a lot of work behind the scenes. Trapping, transporting, organizing, recovering cats, cleaning, feeding, paperwork, and then getting everyone safely back where they belong.
But 24 surgeries means 24 cats who will no longer contribute to the cycle of kittens being born outside.
THAT is how we make a long-term difference.
The more cats we can spay and neuter, the more we help community cats and their caretakers, and the more we can help reduce the number of cats and kittens eventually entering our local shelter.
We cannot rescue our way out of cat overpopulation.
We HAVE to prevent the next generation.
And yesterday, we prevented a whole lot of future kittens. 💪🐱
🚐 AND YES, THE VAN IS HAPPENING!
We are still searching for the perfect new transport van made possible by our amazing grant from Mission Meow!
We want to make sure we find the right one because this van is going to become a HUGE part of our TNR program.
Our goal is to have our new ride found, ready, and on the road by October!
Just imagine how many traps we’re going to be able to haul in that thing. 😹
There are a lot of moving pieces at MMC right now. New medical cases, vet appointments, dentals, surgeries, clinics, TNR colonies, cats in recovery, and a van hunt happening all at the same time.
Some days bring huge wins.
Some days absolutely break our hearts.
And most days bring a little bit of both.
But we keep going because there are still so many cats who need us.
