🚨HIKE IN THE MORNING 🚨
🥾 Join Erika with the Cumberland Gap Trail Alliance for a Hike to Devil’s Bathtub! 🌿💦

Escape the heat and explore one of Southwest Virginia’s most popular destinations with us!

📅 Saturday, August 1, 2026
🕚 Meet at 11:00 AM

📍 Meeting Location:
Devil’s Bathtub Trailhead Kiosk (at the wooden trailhead sign)

🚗 Parking Information:
Parking at the trailhead is very limited. If you have a low-clearance vehicle, please park at the Scott County Park (312 High K**b Road) and walk approximately 0.8 miles up the road to the trailhead to meet the group.

📵 Important – No Cell Service
Cell service is lost before reaching the trailhead, so please download your maps and directions before leaving home. We will wait a few minutes at the meeting location for anyone arriving close to the start time, but communication will not be possible once you’re in the area.

🥾 Trail Details:
• Approximately 4 miles out and back
• 600 feet of elevation gain
• Moderate difficulty
• Expect multiple creek crossings, so wear appropriate footwear and bring plenty of water.

🌿 The Cumberland Gap Trail Alliance is Looking for a New Board President! 🌿

Are you passionate about the outdoors, trails, and making a positive impact in our region? The Cumberland Gap Trail Alliance (CGTA) is seeking a dedicated volunteer to serve as our next Board President.

This is a non-paid, volunteer position and can be performed remotely, making it a great opportunity for someone who wants to help guide the future of our organization from anywhere.

As Board President, you will:
🥾 Lead the Board of Directors and serve as the primary spokesperson for CGTA.
🌲 Ensure board meetings are productive and focused on our mission.
🤝 Work alongside board members and committee chairs to coordinate projects and set organizational priorities.
🏞️ Represent CGTA at community events and with partner organizations.
📋 Help ensure the organization stays aligned with its mission and long-term vision.

Key Responsibilities:
• Facilitate quarterly board meetings and ensure follow-up items are completed.
• Collaborate with board members to develop priorities and strategic goals.
• Serve as a liaison with community partners, agencies, and stakeholders.
• Provide leadership that supports the continued growth and success of CGTA.

🚨 EVENT CANCELED – Acoustic Bat Walk 🦇🌧️

Due to the forecast for rain, Sunday’s Acoustic Bat Walk has been canceled. While we know many of you were looking forward to this event, rainy conditions significantly reduce bat activity, meaning the bats are unlikely to emerge to feed. Because the experience depends on observing and listening to active bats using ultrasonic bat detectors, the weather would prevent us from providing the quality program we had planned.

We appreciate everyone’s enthusiasm and understanding. Thank you to the Tennessee Bat Working Group and Cumberland Gap National Historical Park for partnering with us on this event.

If we’re able to reschedule the Acoustic Bat Walk, we’ll be sure to share the new date on our page.

🚨 This Sunday 7/12 at 8:30pm Free w/Ticket🚨
Join the Cumberland Gap Trail Alliance for a unique nighttime nature experience led by Ash Cable of the Tennessee Bat Working Group. This guided Acoustic Bat Walk invites participants to explore the world of bats using specialized ultrasonic bat detectors that translate bats’ high-frequency echolocation calls into sounds humans can hear.

The evening will begin with a brief “sidewalk talk” introducing the Tennessee Bat Working Group, bat conservation efforts, bat behavior, and the equipment used to study them. As dusk settles in, participants will have hands-on opportunities to use bat detectors and listen as bats hunt insects overhead—often unseen but clearly heard.

After the introduction, the group will head out on a guided night hike along the Wilderness Road Trail to Gap Cave, experiencing nocturnal wildlife in a whole new way.

🥾🌲 What a fantastic National Trails Day in Cumberland Gap! 🌲🥾

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our information tent at Gap Creek Coffee and joined us on today’s hike to the Tri-State Peak. It was wonderful meeting members of our community, sharing information about our local trails, and connecting with fellow outdoor enthusiasts who share a love for the outdoors.

The group hike was filled with great conversations, beautiful scenery, and plenty of smiles along the way. Seeing people of all ages come together to explore one of our region’s most iconic destinations reminds us why our trails are such a valuable part of our community.

Thank you to everyone who participated, and a special thank you to Erika for leading the hike and helping make the day a success.

We look forward to seeing you on the trails again soon!

🌿 What an incredible day! 🌿

We had an amazing turnout today, and we want to sincerely thank everyone who came out and joined us for “Plant Identification While Hiking – Nature’s Gifts All Around.”

A very special thank you goes to The Empirical Herbalist for sharing her time, wisdom, and passion for the natural world with our community. We also want to thank Cumberland Gap National Historical Park for working with us to make this happen.

We hope this presentation inspired people to step outside, explore the trails, and gain a deeper appreciation and respect for the plants, trees, fungi, and natural beauty that surround us every day.
