Today, we commemorate Juneteenth, the day enslaved people in Texas learned of their freedom more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.

Juneteenth is a time to honor the resilience, strength, and contributions of Black Americans while reflecting on our nation's history and the ongoing work of building more equitable communities.

At SAFE, we believe everyone deserves safety, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive. As we celebrate freedom today, we also recognize the importance of ensuring that support and resources are accessible to all members of our community.

In observance of Juneteenth, SAFE's offices will be closed today. Our 24-hour hotline remains available for anyone in need of support. 📞

Every older adult deserves to live with dignity, respect, and safety.

Elder abuse affects millions of older adults each year and can take many forms, including emotional abuse, financial exploitation, neglect, and physical abuse. Because it often happens behind closed doors, many cases go unreported.

At SAFE, we are committed to ensuring that survivors of all ages can access the support they need. Our team includes staff with specialized expertise in serving older adults and other communities that may face unique barriers to seeking help.

Today, on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, take a moment to learn the signs, check in on the older adults in your life, and help create a community where everyone can age safely.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to A.G. Butler & Son and Luck Stone for helping us improve our shelter parking area through their generous donations of gravel, time, resources, and care for our community.

Projects like this are only possible because of the incredible support we receive from local businesses and community members who believe in helping their neighbors.

This is what community looks like. This is what loving your neighbor looks like.

We are deeply grateful for your generosity and partnership. Thank you for helping us create a more welcoming and functional space for the survivors we serve. 💜

We had so much fun at this year's Culpeper Pride Fest! We were honored to spend time with community members, share information about SAFE's services, connect with local organizations, and celebrate a community where everyone deserves to feel safe, supported, and valued. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our tent to say hi!

🌟🎟 For those of you who entered our raffle, stay tuned! We will go live tomorrow, June 11th, at noon for the drawing!

When most people think of PTSD, they picture dramatic flashbacks, panic attacks, or someone reliving a traumatic event. While those experiences can be part of PTSD, they are only a small part of the picture.

PTSD often shows up in less visible ways. It can look like difficulty trusting others, pulling away from relationships, struggling to regulate emotions, feeling constantly on edge, becoming easily overwhelmed, avoiding certain places or situations, or having trouble sleeping and concentrating. Sometimes it looks like anger. Sometimes it looks like numbness. Sometimes it looks like surviving the best way a person knows how.

There is no such thing as a perfect survivor.

Trauma does not always produce responses that are easy to understand or easy to support. Survivors may miss appointments, struggle with communication, push people away, or react strongly to situations that seem minor to others. These responses are not character flaws. They are often the lasting effects of experiences that changed the way a person views safety, trust, and the world around them.

This PTSD Awareness Month, we invite our community to remember that not all wounds are visible, and every survivor deserves compassion, dignity, and the opportunity to heal.
