74 years ago today, Alfred Blalock and Helen B. Taussig, along with Vivien T. Thomas and assistants, gathered in an operating room at Johns Hopkins Hospital for the first attempt to treat tetralogy of Fallot. Their groundbreaking procedure was successful and improved with each attempt. It came to be known as the Blalock-Taussig Shunt, or BT Shunt.

This procedure paved the way for congenital heart surgery today, and instilled hope that "blue babies" could lead full lives.

All, while it breaks my heart to announce this, I must let everyone know that there will NOT be a blood drive for Ayden's birthday this year. I'm very much looking forward to donating blood elsewhere on Ayden's birthday, along with second grade school supplies since he would have started second grade this year. I'm also very much looking forward to having his birthday dinner on his actual birthday since the duration of the blood drive prevents that each year. I'd like to encourage everyone that is able to donate blood to please donate in Ayden's memory sometime this month. I'd love to see pictures of you donating if you wish to share them! Thank you all for your continued support each year!
