From here on, we are partnering with Catamount Beeper as a transportation service for our events in efforts to retain the safety of the Catamounts at WCU.
Every day, 29 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver. This is 1 death every 50 minutes, accounting for 28% of all traffic-related deaths in the US (NHTSA, 2016). Additionally, the NHTSA (2021) recently addressed more than 10,000 people in the US lost their lives to crashes involving an alcohol-impaired driver in 2019. These cases displayed a 3.3 times higher rate of incidence at night than during the day.
In North Carolina, 3,848 people were killed in crashes that involved an alcohol-impaired driver during 2009-2018 (CDC). When looking at the terms of population in towns or cities across NC, the highest percentage of total crashes that are alcohol-related is held by Waynesville, at 6.16% (Farrin, 2020).
Aside from the statistics of DUI’ or DWI’s, the information above signifies the lives lost to something 100% preventable. However, according to the CDC, alcohol-impaired drivers got behind the wheel nearly 147 million times in 2018.
Every day, we’re thankful for the people who surround us at WCU. The students, staff members, husbands & wives, fathers & mothers, sons & daughters, brothers & sisters, along with many others who reside with us in Cullowhee, NC. Events hosted by the Zeta Xi Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha value the lives of those who attend, along with the cost of their attendance. We ask If you choose to join us at any of our events, consider the safety of transportation for yourself and others.
