Today the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center Youth Leadership Group worked for their lunch at the North Alabama Agriplex!

Quite literally ...
🍠 First they dug sweet potatoes. 🍠
🥬 Then they harvested kale. 🥬
🫛 Next they picked purple Hull peas in our parking lot median cover crop (It looks like that on purpose!) 🫛

Then they washed everything and made the best local grown menu! Including smoothies, Brickyard Meats-Butcher Shop Bratwurst, creamed peas Aaron Nichols, Fruit chewy cookies Cullman County - Alabama Extension, and roasted Sweet potatoes.

We set the tables with real linens, used real dishes, and sat together. These students were awesome, every step of the way! After cleaning up and composting ( working on zero waste) , they headed off to Snead’s Farmhouse. Thanks to Haynes Farms, LLC for hosting the group, as well, as Travis Kress sharing about AG Careers!

We had a packed day at Parkside School with the 6th-graders going in depth with local/commercial agriculture logistics and 5th grade studying the spooky and awesome world of Arachnida! 🌍

Who’s scared of spiders? Not Holly Pond’s fifth-graders! We talked about all of the fascinating members of Arachnida and they even got to test out their web-building skills. Thanks to Holly Pond Elementary for having us!

🌱 Garden Club Adventures! Today, East Elementary School Garden Club students peeled homegrown luffas to uncover the natural sponges inside. Then we put on our chef hats and made our own salad dressing to enjoy with fresh romaine lettuce from the garden. Nothing beats learning through growing and tasting! 🧽🥬🥗

Create two batches of the meals below, take one home with you and the spare will be donated to Farmhouse Midwifery Community for the care of their new mothers and bereaved families.

Family meals will serve 6-8 family members.

The meals will be both gluten and dairy free.

Everyone will go home with:

We are building a spiral mint garden in front of the Heritage Center and we are looking for some larger rocks for the spiral.

North Alabama Agriplex brought Plant Propagation to West Point Elementary Tribes Friday. All the students saved seeds from zinnias, marigolds, and chives for next year. They also took cuttings of Creeping Jenny and sedums to take home. And we divided a big aloe. We hope all the plants grow! It was punk rocker day.. they don't always wear neon and leg warmers!
