Trend Warning:
Ride-share companies such as Uber and Lyft DO NOT issued their drivers LED signs. Never assume that just because you see a sign that says Uber, Lyft, Taxi, or even Ride-share, that that driver is real. ALWAYS CONFIRM BEFORE YOU GET IN.
Here are the Steps that Backseat Drivers of Alabama recommends you take before entering a stranger's vehicle.
1.) Confirm your drivers location in your app. If your drivers location is where you are then its a good sign your driver is at least within sight.
2.) Check the license plate. It would also be advisable to take a picture of your drivers license plate and send it to a friend.
3.) Confirm your driver. We recommend, as an added measure of safety, that you try to get the driver to roll down the back window (NOT THE FRONT). I'll explain why in the next step. But this is where you will ask your driver who they are picking up. Do not give the driver your name. Make them tell you. For Uber customers, consider using the PIN feature in your app to confirm your driver. With this feature you give the driver a 4-digit PIN. Once they type this in ask then to confirm your destination address. They won't be able to see this unless they start the ride and entering your PIN automatically starts the ride.
4.) Checking the child safety lock. With the rear windows still rolled down, reach into and open the door from the inside. If the child safety lock is engaged the door will easily open from the outside latch but the inside latch will not work. If the door does not open using the inside latch, back away and report that driver.
