Another great piece from our friends at Salem Over Time. How many of our followers had family that went to school there?

This postcard from the 1930s shows us the public school campus at Cuba, Missouri. Front and center is the Cuba Public School, built in 1905 and designed by Rolla architect Henry Hohenschild. To the right, you catch a glimpse of the 1922 gymnasium/auditorium addition, which still remains as the Recklein Auditorium today. In the back, you catch a glimpse of the two-story giraffestone high school annex, constructed by the PWA as part of the New Deal during the Great Depression.

The PWA is different than the WPA, though both departments completed nearly identical projects. The PWA existed to hire and pay local contractors to complete projects on civic properties, while the WPA actually hired unemployed men, trained them, and put them to work. The high school annex in Cuba was funded by the PWA, but constructed by local builders in 1935.

Sadly, the 1905 building is no longer standing, but the 1922 addition is still in use. The Giraffestone annex that housed Cuba High School is now home to the Cuba MO Museum.

Tonight’s π‘΅π’†π’Šπ’ˆπ’‰π’ƒπ’π’“π’π’š π‘΅π’π’•π’Šπ’„π’† takes us northeast on Highway 19 to the Mural City, where we are crossing the Frisco Railroad on Smith Street in uptown Cuba. Just a block ahead, historic Route 66 cuts its way through town. The closest buildings to the camera on each side of the street still stand, with a popular train-themed restaurant called Frisco’s on the right. Worth the drive to Cuba for the food and experience!
