It's hard to believe that little Miss Ben is going to be 7 years old in December 😍 She's given us such a wonderful experience and adventure, so much so that she's what sparked our beardie craze.

She's my buddy. My pal. She likes to be wherever we're at. We take her for car rides. I take her to visit my sister's dogs lol. She's just part of the family. Talking about it almost makes me want another one 🫶.

Hello! I started this page a couple of years ago with the intention of creating content on a regular basis. However, life happened and it was put on the back burner. Now i am trying to get back on track! I will try to put more of my focus onto my experience as a Beardie mom and talk about the care and maintenance of bearded dragons/lizards. Scaley Rescues is a rescue and adoption group. We have had 8+ years of experience with lizards and other reptiles. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me! I will answer any questions to the best of my ability and should I not have the answers, I will direct you to someone who does. ❤️

"Why should you consider a bearded dragon for a pet?"

Beardies make great pets for many different reasons. They have a docile nature, they're low maintenance and they have a pretty unique appearance, ranging in colors and textures.

They're social creatures and love spending time with their humans. Mine love to come hang out with me and watch TV.

This one pictured is Leo. He's a citrus yellow. He was a rescue. He ended up at a local pet store because the previous owners claimed he was aggressive and they didn't have time to work with him. After taking a week discussing him with my husband, we finally agreed to bring him home with us. There wasn't a mean bone in Leo's body. He was agitated for sure. Being housed in a smaller enclosure at the pet store, not having enough UVA and UVB's, and having a basic diet of crickets. The employee at the pet store said he wouldn't eat salads, however shortly after we brought him home, I was having a salad and set it down to do something else. I came back to my dish to find Leo eating all my lettuce and carrots. Some beardies are pickier than others. Experimenting with different fruits like apples, bananas or blueberries and different veggies like carrots and peas, will give your buddy a chance to see what he likes and doesn't like.

What Leo needed at that point was some TLC. He needed attention and devoted time, as with any animal. Once he had some time to adjust to his new and surroundings, he preferred to be wherever we were.

Beardies will bond with you just like any other animal. Patience and time is the key.

Contrary to popular belief, reptiles actually make great pets. They have feelings and personalities like any other pet. One of the biggest mistakes I see quite often is that people dont do their research before buying a reptile. Even though they're pets, they do require a little more maintaince than a puppy. Dont just walk into a pet store and say oh why not. Take more time and do the research. See exactly what your choice of reptile requires for good care. There's more to feeding and watering. You may also need to consider habitat, lighting, heating, humidity, and also what kind of care would be needed if your pet were to get sick. Research. It will be more than worth it to provide great care and a happy environment.

It took me about a year to decide if getting a bearded dragon was a good decision. So, my fiancee and I did tons of research. Looked at all the good and the bad. Researched if this would be something we'd be able to afford to feed (Because let's be honest, the food bill alone can get pretty expensive with juveniles).

I ended up going into a Pet Smart and there was Ben. In a cage with about 6 other babies. I instantly had to take her home.

Now, Ben will 4 years old in December and I have 3 other bearded dragons named Chance, Leo and Lucky. You ever hear those types of comments that bearded dragons, or reptiles in general, dont show emotion? Like love or gratitude? Its bs. I have 4, each with their own personality and each one is a cuddle bug.

Sure, there are downsides to owning any kind of pet. But I promise you, reptiles make amazing companions. I couldn't love without mine.
