This email from the Health Department was received by your CLA today at 2:15.

Good Afternoon,

Upon a site visit from our staff this late morning / early afternoon it appears that the active algal bloom located near the Crytal Lake Park and Swim beach area, appears to have dissipated and was no longer observed at the time of our conducted on-site evaluation.

Our department has removed the Red Danger signages from the public access locations, including the Crystal Township Public Beach Area, the public Boat Launch, and the South Shore Pier Park.

Though the active bloom appears to have dissipated from the areas that we have been able to evaluate, our department still recommends that the community members should not swim or recreate in any algal blooms if noted on or around the lake, since this previous algal bloom located within the water body has tested positive for Cyanotoxins at levels that can be hazardous to the health of people or pets.

I would caution that when conditions continue to remain right, such as the temperature is warm, the lake is calm, and there are high levels of nutrients, like phosphorous and nitrogen present in the water, these organisms can again rapidly increase to form cyanobacterial blooms—or Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). They can change in size, severity, and location within the same day due to wind and weather conditions. These blooms can last a few days, weeks, or longer, and are considered harmful because they may contain cyanotoxins. A bloom can last days to months. Blooms may also disappear on a waterbody but then form again days or weeks later.

I have attached a link below to a EGLE Harmful Algal Bloom Story Map. This is a great resource for information about Algal Blooms including photos that you, your staff or community members can review.

I have also attached a link below to the EGLE website on Harmful Algal Blooms. They have a ton of great resources available on Algal Blooms and identification.

I have attached handouts that can be shared with the community members or any interested parties, should you get any additional questions.

Thank you,

⚠️ CRYSTAL LAKE – HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOM ALERT ⚠️
We have been notified that a harmful algal bloom has been identified in Crystal Lake in Crystal Township, Montcalm County, and warning signs are being posted around the lake.
For now, please use extra caution and avoid any areas where you can see green scum, streaks, discolored water, or other visible algae.
Please:
• Do not swim in areas where a bloom is present.
• Keep children and pets out of affected water.
• Do not allow pets to drink lake water where algae is visible.
• Avoid boating, jet skiing, or fishing directly through visible bloom areas.
Important: We have not yet received confirmation that the entire lake has been officially closed to all use. We are working to get additional information from the Mid-Michigan District Health Department regarding the extent of the bloom, test results, and any additional restrictions.
Algal blooms can move and change quickly depending on wind and weather conditions, so an area that looks clear at one point may look different later.
Please share this with your neighbors and anyone planning to use Crystal Lake. We will provide additional information as soon as we receive it.
When in doubt, keep out.

Your Crystal Lake Association is thrilled to report that on last week’s lake evaluation no invasive weeds were detected in the lake! We’ve been evaluating our beautiful lake for many decades and this is the first time ever no treatments were recommended! That’s not to say we’ve won the war against invasive weeds, but rather an indication that our efforts are working! Thanks to our water management team for their long hours of collecting samples, evaluation and treatments.
