The next generation is leading restoration in Kings Bay. 🌱

Save Crystal River celebrated its 10th Annual Student Planting Day at Hunter Springs Park, where fifth grade students from Crystal River Primary School planted eelgrass and engaged in hands-on activities designed to connect them to the waterway they see every day.

Some more beautiful photos of hybrid reef structures along with a look at Parker Island.✨
Parker Island is where locals and visitors cool off all summer long in Kings Bay. This summer, it will be the site of the pilot project. Hybrid reef structures will be placed just offshore to help protect the shoreline and support the return of seagrass by creating calmer, clearer conditions in the water. This is the next step in restoring Kings Bay and protecting what makes it special.

Manatees know a good habitat when they see one 🦭💙🌿

In Kings Bay, seagrass planting, restoration of springs and hybrid reefs are all helping to ensure that manatees will be able to thrive in the waters of Crystal River for years to come.

Perched on the shoreline, this is what restoration looks like in action. These hybrid reef structures protect shorelines while creating space for wildlife to return, from birds above to seagrass below. Built to work with nature, they’re already becoming part of the ecosystem. 64+ Million Gallons of fresh water cycle through Crystal River every single day.

That is the benchmark for a first-magnitude spring, and Crystal River is fed by more than 70 springs. It is one of Florida's outstanding waterways and worth protecting. Without the springs, Crystal River would be a salt water system.

Save Crystal River took the stage at the Tampa Bay Regional Resiliency Summit. President Lisa Moore shared how proposed hybrid reef solutions could help reduce wave energy, stabilize sediment and protect vulnerable habitat in Kings Bay. 🌿

We’re especially grateful to Citrus County Administrator Steve Howard and County Commissioner Rebecca Bays for their continued leadership and support in helping restore and protect Kings Bay.

Resilient barrier islands, and a healthier Kings Bay has always been the goal.

Florida is losing its springs. One-third of historic spring flow has been lost statewide. Some springs have dried up or been buried. Others are degrading from erosion, pumping, pollution and sea level rise. What’s been protected here is more than a local win. it's a piece of a broader conservation to protect Florida's water for the future. Take action at savecrystalriver.com/takeaction.

County Administrator Steve Howard spoke on the County Administrator’s Panel at the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council's Resiliency Summit today. Leaders from various counties came together to discuss ongoing resilience efforts, projects, and programs throughout the region.

Our partners at Save Crystal River were present to discuss springs restoration and seagrass protection initiatives.

“It was an honor to be selected to speak on the County Administrator’s panel for TBRPC’s 2026 Resiliency Summit. I thank them for hosting such an informative event, and I applaud the work of organizations like Save Crystal River, which are dedicated to saving our waters,” said Steve Howard.
