One Year Ago, Everything Changed.

What we believed was an open field revealed a very different story.

One year ago, Friends of Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery conducted a preliminary Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey in the low-lying section of the cemetery (SE Quadrant)—the area that collects water due to its lower elevation. Gary Ellis of Gulf Archaelogic Research Institute (GARI) led this effort.

What happened next changed the course of our preservation efforts.

With just a single pass of the GPR equipment, approximately 25 potential unmarked gravesites were identified beneath the surface. Combined with the 35 gravesites previously located through cleaning, observation, and careful hand probing, it became clear that this area was far from an empty field.

We realized we were standing on sacred ground containing far more burials than anyone had documented.

That discovery led to an important decision: Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery needed a comprehensive GPR survey of the entire cemetery, not just a small section. Our comprehensive GPR Survey is in process.

Today, that work is helping us uncover forgotten history, identify unmarked graves, protect burial locations, and restore dignity to those who have rested here for generations.

A shared Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) expert.

One day, he's helping uncover what lies beneath the surface for NASA, SpaceX, and other aerospace projects. The next, he's helping us identify unmarked graves and preserve generations of local history right here in Citrus County.

At Historic Crystal Memorial Gardens Cemetery (est. 1884), Ground Penetrating Radar technology is helping us locate undocumented burials, better understand the cemetery's historic footprint, and ensure those who came before us are remembered with dignity and respect.
