For years, Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self has been channeled through the Avenues of Service, which form the foundation of club activity. Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the effective functioning of the club. Vocational Service encourages Rotarians to serve others through their vocations and to practice high ethical standards. Observed ea

ch October, Vocational Service Month spotlights Rotary club projects related to this avenue, offering opportunity for clubs and districts to use their professional skills in service projects. Community Service covers the projects and activities the club undertakes to improve life in its community. International Service encompasses actions taken to expand Rotary’s humanitarian reach around the globe and to promote world understanding and peace. Rotarians can support International Service by sponsoring a project in another country, seeking international project partners to support projects in their own communities, or by personally volunteering at an international project site. New Generations Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities as RYLA , Rotaract and Interact , service projects, and creating international understanding with Rotary Youth Exchange .

Rotary of Crystal River recognition

A night of annual recognition was held Monday by the Rotary Club of Crystal River. Johnny Cash, at left, was installed as the new president of the club. Tracy Alm was the retiring club president and she gave out two special awards for the evening. Blair Commons and Barry Schwartz were recognized as the Rotarians of the Year for their hard work and dedication. Commons, at right, was recognized for his chairmanship of the Beast Feast fundraising event and the Rise Against Hunger food program. Schwartz, second from left, was recognized for his leadership of student scholarship programs and the annual ST4L student leadership training.

Feeding the hungry

Volunteers from all over Citrus County gathered at Crystal River High School on Saturday morning to prepare packaged foods for hungry people around the world. The Stop Hunger Now program was organized by the Rotary Club of Crystal River and the volunteers crowded into the school auditorium and spent the morning preparing meals. The foods are distributed in nations around the world where residents are suffering as a result of natural disasters, war or economic woes. The Citrus County volunteers packed up 14,000 meals for those in need.

Student of the month

Tyler Simmons was recently recognized as the student of the month by the Rotary Club of Crystal River for his outstanding academic achievements and student leadership. Tyler is graduating with a 3.8 GPA after taking 11 honors level classes along with 4 AP classes. He has been an outstanding soccer play for the school team and has been active with the Key Club. As a student in the health academy, Tyler has completed the nursing pathway program and earned his CNA license and his CPR certification. While attending high school, he also works at Diamond Ridge Health and Rehabilitation Center. He plans on attending the University of West Florida to become a health care professional who focuses on patient care. Student of the Month

Violet Hill, a culinary arts student at Crystal River High School, was recognized recently as student of the month by the Rotary Club. Violet is a Cum Laude graduate of the high school and a four year student in the culinary arts program. She has traveled internationally to take cooking lessons and received the newly established Deputy Rodriquez Scholarship for the Culinary Arts. She has also been active in the Interact Club and the theater program. She plans on attending Withlacoochee Technical College for Culinary Arts and pursue an internship at the Disney Culinary program. Rotary honors administrator

Jessica Price, the dean of students at Crystal River High School, was honored this week with a Paul Harris Fellow from the Rotary Club of Crystal River. Ms. Price was recognized for her coordination of student achievement awards given by the Rotary Club to outstanding students at the high school. The recognition includes a $1,000 contribution to Rotary International where the funds will be used to feed hungry people and fight polio. Student of the month

Logan Barbieri of Crystal River High School was recently named Student of the Month by the Crystal River Rotary Club. Logan is a high achiever who is involved in the Citrus County Education Foundation and serves on the Superintendent’s Student Council. He is active in sports at the high school including track & field, cross country, the swim team, baseball and basketball. Logan is a volunteer with Rotary activities in Inverness and Crystal River. As he graduates he plans on attending Santa Fe College and the University of Florida. CRHS student of the month

The Crystal River Rotary Club recently recognized Sydney Pool as the student of the month at Crystal River High School. Sydney is a high-achieving senior with a 4.02 GPA and is an honor student in the Health Academy. She has already received her certification as a Biotechnician Assistant and with CPR certification. Rotary contribution

The Rotary Club of Crystal River recently donated $2,000 to the Citrus Aid Cancer Foundation. The foundation provides transportation, financial assistance and support to local residents who are going through cancer treatment and need some help. The Cancer Walk recently held at the town square in Crystal River was the group’s annual fundraiser.
