The Rotary 4-Way Test is a moral code that guides Rotarians in their personal and professional relationships, consisting of four key questions to evaluate the ethics of their actions.

Serving as the unifying preamble to all four questions, the phrase “Of the things we think, say, or do” integrates these ethical principles into every aspect of personal and professional life. By applying this comprehensive framework, Rotarians ensure that individual thoughts, spoken words, and deliberate actions work in harmony to produce constructive outcomes. Together, these four interconnected questions form The Four-Way Test, one of Rotary’s most significant and enduring contributions to global ethics, ethical leadership, and business integrity.

The Rotary 4-Way Test is a moral code that guides Rotarians in their personal and professional relationships, consisting of four key questions to evaluate the ethics of their actions.

The fourth question of The Four-Way Test, "Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?", focuses on generating positive, constructive outcomes for everyone affected by a decision, supporting sustainable progress and community well-being. When Herbert J. Taylor created the test, he specifically selected the word "beneficial" rather than "profitable" to emphasize service to the greater good over individual or purely financial gain. True benefit requires contributing meaningful value to others, shifting perspective away from self-interest and toward ethical leadership, service, and organizational integrity.
