Faces of D47: โGrowing up, I always knew I wanted to work with kids. My mom was a teacher and ran a home daycare, so I was always around learning environments. I was also really into Spanish in middle and high school, which sparked my interest in teaching in both languages. I went to Illinois State and earned my Bachelor's in Bilingual Education with an ESL endorsement, and recently completed my Master's in Literacy."
"Two of my favorite formative experiences were studying abroad in Spain during college and student teaching a 2nd grade bilingual class. While in Spain, I was fully immersed in the language and culture. During student teaching, my cooperating teacher helped my love for teaching in two languages truly blossom."
"After college, I began applying to jobs. I applied to Crystal Lake because Iโd heard their dual language program was strong, and I got the interview. Thatโs how my journey at North began. This is now my eighth year teaching 2nd grade dual language. What I love most is seeing my studentsโ growth over the year. I had a student who was a newcomer and didnโt speak any English at first. By the end of the year, she could read in English. At conferences, when I shared her progress with her parents, they were moved to tears. Moments like these stick with me. Seeing growth in studentsโfrom saying a few words to explaining their thinking in full sentencesโis incredibly rewarding."
"I love collaborating with my teammate, Jill. Weโve been partners since I started, combining classes, modeling strategies, and bouncing ideas off each other. Being a dual language teacher can be hard, so itโs wonderful to have that support. Iโm currently the teacher rep for PTO, helping build the dual language parent community and bringing in cultural celebrations."
"In general, I really love being a dual language teacher. Itโs challenging, but the rewards feel twice as big. Teaching kids how to read, write, do math, and build social skills in two languages fosters independence, problem-solving, and a lifelong love of learning.โ Christy Krueger, 2nd Grade Dual Language Teacher, North
