Gratitude. Joy. Love for the beloved community. We are stunned by this year’s response to our first ever online registration for the 2026 Tule Lake Pilgrimage. After only a couple hours, our registration system reached capacity and we are now closed. There is currently a long standby list, with no guarantees for entrance. We are sorry to turn people away, but this helps to maintain a safe and healthy environment for all. Thank you, everyone for your support, interest and care. Watch our website, IG and FB as we prepare for this year’s pilgrimage, completely run by a multigenerational team of dedicated volunteers. In a display of true solidarity, opening the inaugural Pilgrimage at the Snow Country Prison (WWII DOJ prison) Memorial in Bismarck, North Dakota, host Leander R. McDonald (Dakota/Sahnish/Hidatsa/Hunkpapa Nations) president of the United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) honored descendants of Japanese American internees on Friday. September 5. Tule Lake Committee Members, Dr. Satsuki Ina and Barbara Takei were amongst the honorees and Stan Shikuma performed taiko for the ceremony. Some 1,200 Issei Japanese Americans were incarcerated there and 750 who renounced their citizenship were from Tule Lake before they were readied to be deported. The memorial was a collaborative project commissioned by UTTC and managed by the award-winning social-justice architectural firm MASS Design Group.
