🍀 Finding the joy in sobriety this St. Patrick’s Day 🍀

St. Patrick’s Day can look like harmless fun from the outside with parades, parties, and everyone “being Irish for a day.” But in recovery, it might feel like there’s pressure to show up, play along, and act like it’s no big deal to be surrounded by potential triggers. Feeling a little more stressed or emotionally drained today is completely normal, even if things have been going well for a while.

But there’s real freedom in embracing sobriety during these moments, too. You get to be present for the celebration, remember the conversations, make the calls you want to make, and leave when you’re ready. And you wake up the next morning clear-headed and proud of how you handled it. That’s not nothing. For a lot of people in recovery, those mornings end up being some of the best proof that the work is paying off.

Since 2015, Black Balloon Day has been recognized internationally on March 6th, as a day of remembrance to honor loved ones lost to drug overdose and to raise awareness about the addiction crisis. The day encourages communities to come together, reduce the stigma surrounding substance use disorder, and support those affected by it. Participants display black balloons outside their homes, businesses, or on social media to represent the lives lost to overdose. We hope you use today’s symbolic gesture to spark positive conversations that turn grief into action and advocacy. Who are you remembering today?

The overdose crisis doesn’t just shatter our families, it fractures our communities.

The losses go deeper than one person, one family or one neighborhood. They ripple out into classrooms, workplaces and the spaces we all share. They cross borders between cities, states and nations.

But in a time when people are searching for connection and safety, overdose also reminds us that our lives are deeply intertwined.

On this International Overdose Awareness Day, Hope House stands with communities across the globe to honor the lives lost to overdose and to strengthen the support for those still struggling. Healing and prevention begin with all of us, together.

R1 Learning System

The R1 program delivers greater engagement for leading evidence-based and best practice theories in mental health, substance use disorder, and life skills. It provides interactive tools, training, and technology solutions that enable effective implementation and use of evidence-based practices such as motivational interviewing (MI) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The central tools of the system, the Discovery Cards (and R1 Discover App), provide a hands-on, concrete approach that enables both practitioners and clients to learn and apply these theories to real-life situations and circumstances. R1’s tools are effective and easily adapted for different populations and settings and by practitioners at all levels of knowledge, skill, and experience.

Who is at risk for an overdose?

Anyone using either prescribed or illegal opioids can have an overdose, but you're at higher risk if you:

* Take prescription opioids more often or at higher doses than prescribed
* Take an opioid after a period of not using them
* Take opioids with alcohol or sedatives, such as:
* sleeping pills
* muscle relaxants
* benzodiazepines
* Inject or smoke opioids or illegal drugs which could contain opioids
* Take an opioid you're not used to, or switch to a stronger opioid
* Take a higher dose than you're used to
* Use drugs of unknown purity or strength
* Have other health conditions, like liver or kidney disease or breathing problems

An overdose can also happen if you use opioids other than as prescribed. For example, extended-release opioid tablets are meant to be swallowed whole. If you crush or break them before taking them, too much of the drug is released at once. This can cause an overdose.

The strength and type of illegal opioids are unknown and can vary. This can increase the risk of overdose and death.

Opioids like fentanyl and carfentanil can be particularly dangerous because they're:
* Fatal in very small amounts
* Often mixed with other illegal drugs, such as:
* xylazine
* co***ne
* illegal counterfeit prescription drugs such as oxycodone
