ABOUT RICHARD
In the early 1990s, Richelieu Dennis cofounded Sundial Brands with the goal of creating natural hair and beauty products for consumers of color. Originally from Liberia, Dennis used his grandmother’s homebrewed recipes to create Sundial’s first products, which he sold on the streets of Harlem. Today, his company oversees three brands—SheaMoisture ( ), Nubian Heritage ( ), and Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture ( ) —and had an estimated value of $700 million in September 2015, when Bain Capital acquired a minority stake. In 2015 Sundial was named to the 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in the United States and received the 2015 Corporate Social Responsibility of the Year Award from /Beauty Inc.

In November 2017, Richelieu negotiated the largest natural personal care deal ever in the U.S with and created a groundbreaking US$100 million New Voices Fund to invest in and empower women of color entrepreneurs.

In 2017, Richelieu founded Essence Ventures, which acquired Communications Inc. from Time Inc. – reestablishing ESSENCE as a 100% black-owned independent company.
