🌱 4‑H Garden Club Year in Review! 🌱

What an amazing year it’s been with our 4‑H Garden Club! We started our garden together back in October and have loved watching it grow right along with our members 🌿🍅

Throughout the year, our kids learned so much, including:

🌾 Native plants and Louisiana prairies with our friends from the Native Plant Project
🦞🌾 Louisiana agriculture—crawfish, rice, and sugarcane—thanks to specialists and agents from the LSU AgCenter
🌵 All about succulent plants
🚜 A field trip to a crawfish pond, complete with a boat ride
🌱 Hands-on gardening skills like transplanting and thinning we harvested our carrots and cabbages together!

To wrap up the year, we picked tons of delicious strawberries 🍓 and learned about fascinating carnivorous plants!

Thank you to Mrs. Christine Meyers for all of your help and support this year. We truly couldn’t have done this without you! 💚

It was a great year, and we can’t wait to do it all again. Any Acadia Parish 4‑H member age 9-12 is welcome to join us next year! Garden Club will start back up in October, we hope to see you there! 🌻

🌱 Giant shoutout to Mrs. Vicky Regan at South Crowley Elementary! 🌱

She has built and maintained a beautiful, thriving garden for her students, filled with strawberries, squash, cucumbers, potatoes, snap peas, tomatoes, and flowers. 🍓🥒🍅

This garden is a true testament to her dedication, hard work, and love for her students. Mrs. Vicky is doing an amazing job, and her garden continues to grow right alongside the kids she inspires every day.

💚 Thank you for everything you do to make hands-on learning come alive! Vicky Regan

Hummingbird migration has started!

Hummingbird migration has started!

Hummingbirds typically start migrating through Louisiana this month. You can entice them to your yard with the proper nourishment. A sugar syrup dispensed from the feeder supplements the birds’ natural diet of nectar and insects with an unlimited amount of calories to fuel their rapid metabolism. The best formula for feeders should approximate natural nectar. A good, simple formula can be made at home by dissolving 1 part of cane sugar in 4 parts of boiling water. Allow the sugar syrup to cool before filling feeders.

Place feeders high enough so that domestic cats cannot attack the birds while they are feeding, and place them near windows for maximum viewing pleasure. Feeders are most effective when located within view of flowers that attract hummingbirds.

Best to wait and prune frost damaged plants!

Best to wait and prune frost damaged plants!

❄️ Did the freeze leave your plants looking sad and soggy?
Bitter cold has settled across Louisiana, and many of us woke up to frozen, droopy plants. It’s tempting to start trimming or clearing them out as soon as temperatures rise, but LSU AgCenter horticulturist Jason Stagg says hold off on the pruning shears for now.
🌿 Why wait?
Even if leaves look burned or mushy, the stems and roots may still be alive and ready to bounce back this spring. Plus, with more nights in the 20s ahead, damaged top growth can actually help insulate and protect the roots during the next freeze.
🌱 Stagg’s key advice:
➡️ Wait until spring to prune freeze‑damaged plants. By then, you’ll clearly see what survived and where new growth is emerging.
➡️ If you must tidy things up sooner:
• Prune as little as possible
• Never remove more than one‑third of a plant’s height
• Avoid cutting plants all the way to the ground
• Check for life by gently scraping a stem — green tissue means it’s alive!

❄️ With a major winter storm forecasted, the LSU AgCenter has quick guidance to help you prepare.
🏠 Home Tips
• Let one faucet drip to help prevent frozen pipes
• Cover outdoor faucets with foam sleeves or household materials
• Use space heaters safely — never use your stove for heat
• If using a generator, keep it outside and 20+ feet from doors and windows
• Seal drafts and gather emergency supplies
🌿 Plant Tips
• Hardy plants like azaleas, camellias, hollies, and many natives should be fine
• Protect tender plants, citrus, tropicals and sensitive annuals
• Bring container plants indoors or group them near a south-facing wall and cover
• Use frost cloth or sheets on landscape plants, making sure covers reach the ground
Stay safe and prepare now.
