Croton On Hudson Emergency Medical Services Croton-on-Hudson Emergency Medical Services provides ambulance service to the Village of Croton

Croton-on-Hudson Emergency Medical Services is a volunteer organization, assisted by Paid Staffing. That means that although there is always one paid EMT/Driver on duty 24/7, they require a volunteer EMT or Driver to complete a crew. Much of the time, the Paid staff does not need to crew the ambulance, due to the presence to of a volunteer EMT and Driver.

In September, Croton EMS responded to 87 calls for service. On top of this, our members attended a number of community events and our Youth Corps program has picked back up with the commencement of the school year.

As always, we appreciate our close friends at Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department, Croton PD, Ossining Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Westchester County Department of Emergency Services.

On November 3rd, Croton voters decide on a LOSAP program for Croton EMS volunteers. LOSAP is a moderate retirement benefit paid to volunteers later in life. It is a defined benefit based on number of years of active service to our community. Croton-on-Hudson Fire Department volunteers have had a similar program since 2003, and many of our neighboring volunteer EMS agencies maintain similar programs for their members.

Since this is fire prevention month I am putting out a little PSA.

This morning at 5:00 am our NEST smoke detectors started sounding. Thankfully my fire Chief husband had placed a smoke detector in the garage. The garage was full of smoke. My son ran to the boiler while my daughter saw on the workbench a small fire. A RYOBI battery that was not on a charger and sitting on a work bench was in thermal runaway. She grabbed it and threw outside.

We have a ton of those batteries which are now all outside. Nest also alerted everyone’s phone. So had we not been home we would have been alerted. I can’t recommend it enough. Looking at fireproof boxes now to store them.
Stay safe. Angela Outhouse

Our featured member this week is Don Holder! A native of Rockville Centre, NY, Don has been a member of Croton EMS for six years. Meet Matthea Schor, our latest member spotlight! A lifelong Croton resident and 2021 graduate of CHHS, Matthea joined Croton EMS as a sophomore in our Youth Corps. She went on to serve as Youth Corps Captain for two years before becoming the youngest EMT in Croton EMS history at just 17, after New York State began allowing 17-year-olds to certify during the pandemic! As an adult member, Matthea has been very active on numerous committees. Though she's lived largely out of state for the past five years, she still runs calls when home and joins meetings remotely. Matthea graduated summa cm laude from Emory University in 2025 with a degree in Biology and Nutrition, where she researched cystic fibrosis and nutrition and gave oral presentations at national conferences, including the North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference. During her gap year, she worked as an ER tech in Columbus, GA, and served as a designated religious group leader for the U.S. Army at Fort Benning. Matthea just started at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in an accelerated three-year MD program, to be followed by residency in Emergency Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital. When she's not studying or running calls, the future Dr. Schor enjoys working out, going to the beach, and baking sourdough.

This week we’re proud to spotlight Rich Ellison! Originally from Burnt Hills, NY, Rich has been a dedicated member of Croton EMS for 9 years. He currently serves as Treasurer and is a member of our board of directors, and he previously served as vice president. Rich has become one of our top responders, responding to over 3,000 calls since joining the agency in 2017. Outside of EMS, he works as an Operations Manager for JP Morgan Chase Asset Management and enjoys traveling, home wine-making, weight training, bicycling, physical fitness, and spending time with his grandchildren. An avid traveler, Rich has visited all 50 states, 9 Canadian provinces, and 50 countries! Rich joined Croton EMS to honor the memory of his son, Charles, who passed away in 2017 from brain cancer at the age of 20. Charles was a passionate member of Croton EMS during high school and college, and in his honor, Rich and his wife Betsy established a scholarship in Charles’ name to recognize similarly passionate high school seniors.
