The Links, Incorporated: Westchester County & Greater Hudson Valley Chapters Host Successful Community Wellness Expo

The Westchester County and Greater Hudson Valley Chapters of The Links, Incorporated, successfully launched "A Community Wellness Expo" at the Boys & Girls Club of New Rochelle (BGCNR) on Saturday March 21,2026. This event was a local manifestation of the national Black Family Wellness Expo initiative of The Links, Incorporated, which saw over 235 out of 303 chapters hosting similar Wellness Expos across the country and in the Bahamas throughout March, including 160 events held on the National Day of Impact, March 21st.

The Expo was live-streamed nationally and included The BGCNR's Re*****on site which also drew 357 community members onsite. The Expo offered a rich array of services and activities for multigenerational families. Attendees benefited from 14 educational workshops, four health screening stations, and 18 community booths highlighting various services. Event highlights included engaging healthy cooking demonstrations, a DJ entertainment stage featuring praise and line dancers, and mobile units providing dental and ambulance services.

Led by Links leadership present included Lisa Stenson Haggray, President of the Westchester County (NY) Links Chapter, and Laurie Collins-Thomas, President of the Greater Hudson Valley (NY) Links Chapter the event received important remarks from several esteemed political and religious leaders from Westchester County and NY State.

In honor of February being American Heart Health Month, Westchester Chapter went Red. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among women. With the recognition of disparities in cardiovascular care in women the chapter is increasing awareness and the collaborative efforts to close gaps in the care of women with CVD.

We are so honored that the Westchester County Press, covered our Chapter’s work in their 1/22/26 edition on page nine.

The Westchester County Press was founded in 1928 to serve the white community of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. Rev. Alger L. Adams and his wife, Jessie Adams, of Hastings, purchased the paper in 1951 and changed its mission to serve the African American communities in Westchester County. Rev. and Mrs. Adams sold the paper in 1986 to M. Paul Redd of Rye, NY, who published the paper for the next 23 years. Sandra Blackwell has been with The Westchester County Press since 1986, serving as a volunteer for 23 years. She became the new owner and publisher in January 2009 after the untimely death of Publisher M. Paul Redd. Sandy retired in 2005 after being a special education teacher for 39 years and now devotes a great deal of her time to gathering positive news for the paper. The Westchester County Press is one of the 220 newspapers holding membership in the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA).

The Westchester County (NY) Chapter of The Links Incorporated Leads for Black KARE (Kidney Awareness, Resources, and Education) were able to share important information about chronic kidney disease prevention and treatment during the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day Literary Tea and NY Convent Church.

Data and reports show that Black adults in the United States are three times more likely to develop kidney failure than their white counterparts, and many are unaware that they have the
disease.
