Dixie County Education Association

Dixie County Education Association The Dixie County Education Association is working hard to build a better workplace for teachers and educational staff professionals. Join our cause! Why Union?

A union in the workplace provides a voice for employees. Unions empower workers by uniting people with common goals. When people advocate as one, they are more powerful and can accomplish more than as individuals. A union in the workplace can provide many benefits:
Respect on the job
Better wages and benefits
Flexibility for work and family needs
A counterbalance to the unchecked power of employer

s
A voice in improving the quality of their products and services

Why join? Here are a few reasons:

A Voice on the Job. Union workers have the right to negotiate with their employer over wages, hours, benefits and working conditions. Without a union, management makes all the decisions alone. Without collective bargaining, Florida teachers and education staff professionals (ESPs) would have no legal rights at all under the state's "right to work" labor laws. Strength in Numbers. Union workers negotiate and organize for improvements as a unified group instead of as individuals. When we work together, this collective force translates into more power and a better chance of getting our voices heard. A Legally Binding Written Contract. Union workers have a contract that defines and guarantees the terms of our employment. The members of the union negotiate their contract with management. With help from union staff, we decide what gets proposed, elect our own bargaining team, negotiate the contract and vote to approve the contract. Protection and Support. Union workers need the assurance that our workplace rights, including health and safety conditions, are being upheld and monitored and ensure the ability to challenge any unfair or questionable decisions or actions. Respect. Union workers join, not because we’re against our employer, but because we want to improve our jobs by joining with co-workers to gain greater respect and control over our worksite and employment.

Last Sunday, March 3, DCEA celebrated its 49th Birthday. So many years of representing the teachers and educational support professionals of Dixie District School District. It so sad to think that it is coming to an end. According to state law, if we do not have 60% membership of teachers and ESPs, we will face losing our Bargaining Agent status. For several years we have been fighting the good fight to keep bargaining. We have seen great things added to our bargaining agreements. I ask that all teachers and ESPs please consider saving DCEA by joining. It is really easy to do. Go to https://feaweb.org or use QR codes found on DCEA boards.

On Thursday, 10:30, D. Peppers Gym, I am scheduled to represent Dixie Teachers and Educational Support Professionals at the Bargaining Table. Personally, I stand to receive little or no increase in salary as a 36 year teacher and supplemental increases do not effect me. Likewise, I will witness salary increases for others that took me years to obtain. In addition, I will volunteer my time as Bargaining Chair and stand to gain little to compensate my time. Finally, though I am grateful to our employer’s respectful participation, Annette that assists in figuring out “the ask”, and those few that show up to witness the process, the burden follows me home. So, you can imagine that it is difficult for me to gain motivation to care and show up myself. What is worse, though, along with the responsibility of bargaining, the responsibilities of gaining 60% membership and signing members up for Edues hang over my head like dragons ready to pounce. And, this is just in the summer. The dragons of lesson planning, grading papers, and student achievement will join the ranks in a few short weeks. Are their any allies out there that can help me and my small in number team to slay a few dragons? If compensation is your thing, show up at 10:30. If you want to save DCEA from losing Representation Status and gaining membership to have a “voice”, join us in a fall planning meeting at our DCEA Office afterwards. As it is a working lunch, food from the Cottage Cafe will be provided as compensation to those who attend.

Another Summer Academy in the books. Can it be six? Yes, I have finished 6 years as Dixie County Education Association President. It is so great to be able to attend Summer Academy and learn more ways to strengthen the voices of our members, Dixie Teachers and Educational Support Professionals. We begin our bargaining season for salary and supplement increases on next Tuesday, 10:30, Dolphus Peppers Gym. The first topic will be instructional salaries. “Alone we can do so little, TOGETHER we can do so much!” ~ Helen Keller

Levy, Dixie, Madison, and Suwannee Locals closed another FEA Delegate Assembly. Safety Protocols were in place for the DA: no guests, limited staff members, proof of vaccination or negative test result, masks, and social distancing practices. This brief picture distance protocol break was for one picture by one camera before heading home. Hopefully next year the world will be free of COVID!

This has been my chair at the August Florida Education Association Governance Board last evening and since 8:30 this morning. As President of DCEA, I am a member. I am very grateful that I could attend through a Zoom format. I can’t wait for our Fall DCEA General Membership Meeting to share the wonderful things I learned from this meeting. It was great to speak with and hear so many teachers and Education Support Professionals across the state discuss ways to support Public Education. Thank you to FEA leadership, FEA staff, and their guest speakers for an amazing Governance Board Meeting!

This morning I am attending the final Zoom FEA Governance Board Meeting. It is so wonderful to see so many educators and educational support professionals from across the state gather to discuss and support Public Education in Florida! Thank you FEA leaders and staff for your dedication.

Fed, FEA former President and friend, said so well once, “Find your guiding star.” Thirty-three years ago, I began my professional life as a public education teacher. Other than my faith and family, this is my “guiding star”. I want to thank all the members of the Dixie County Education Association for their support of public education. In Dixie, we have successfully bargained this year to improve compensation for instructional and support professionals. When those who work with children are valued, they become stronger advocates for students.

Best wishes to all for a successful closure to the school year,
DeAnne
