Purple pupils at Crosbyton Elementary laughed all the way to the bank in earning Brave Bucks for their PAX leadership skills. Ready to cash their checks and shop at the Brave Store was the excitement in the air last week. The Elementary Brave Store is designed to teach financial literacy to the students as part of a complete curriculum and is open for business. Students can save, spend, or donate, using their Brave Bucks.
After every six-weeks, students will have the opportunity to put their buying skills to the test making the decisions to spend now or wait later for bigger purchases. The items in the store are supported by an important group of sponsors. A special thank you to Crosbyton Lions Club , South Plain Electric Cooperative, and Crosbyton I.S.D. for their partnership in the efforts to educate scholars on financial literacy!

The Crosbyton Lions Club met the second Wednesday in September and had a program presented by District Governor Jake Bentley. His wife, Lion Darlene, was also in attendance. Lion Bentley began by remembering one of Crosbyton’s best Lions, Lion Joe Hargrove, recalling what an impact he made on Lions everywhere for many years. Bentley shared that the International President’s motto is “Make Your Mark” and challenged those in attendance to make it a goal to make someone’s life better every day. There are 1.4 million Lions in the world that can be doing this, and have the claim to be the largest humanitarian organization in the world.
Bentley’s theme is “Live Your Legacy”, living out the theme of Lions for service, saying, “We will serve so we can grow, and we will grow so we can serve.” The district’s goals are to grow members, servers, leaders, and financial support. The club welcomed the couple to Crosbyton.
The Crosbyton Lions Club meets the second Wednesday of each month at noon at the Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum. The Lions have lunch and have an informative program. The Lions motto is, “WE SERVE!” The Lions are always looking for individuals to jump on board and help in this endeavor! Visit next month!

The Crosbyton Lions Club President, Lion Melinda Cagle presented third grade teacher Mrs. Williams a $300 check to support the financial literacy program at the elementary level. The money will be used to purchase items for the Brave’s Store. The Brave’s Store is part of a financial literacy project that has evolved over time as an excellent teaching tool. The project is expanding, haven started in the third grade, and has now extended the program to the entire elementary school.
In the program, scholars, the name for students, can earn play money throughout the year through several avenues. Several of those avenues include when a parent signs a student’s daily take home folder, a completed daily reading log, or being “caught” doing amazing things, money is earned. Amazing things consist of, thinking outside the box, random acts of service, and going beyond the call of duty. While students can buy school supplies with their earned money, they quickly learn the value of the dollar. If the store is low on pencils, the cost goes up. It is called supply and demand. If a product cannot be found on the market, it is scarce.
Financial planners create a trifold pocket folder indicating what they will earn, donate, and save. Each week, students come to the “bank” to deposit their money and see their earnings grow. When it comes to shopping at the Brave Store, kids decide how much they want to withdraw and spend. Shopping is available three times a year: Christmas, Spring Break, and at the end of the school year. It is a true-life lesson making purchasing decisions and determining if you have enough money or must return items. Furthermore, deciding if the purchase is a want or a need comes into the decision-making process.
At the end of the year, donors decide which non-profit agency they would like to support through their donations of money or supplies. In conjunction with our unit of entrepreneurs in social studies, the idea of giving really drives home the true meaning of being a philanthropist.
While funding this project is not an easy task, the support by the Lions Club will assist in the mission for the classroom: equip students with money management knowledge and skills to secure a better tomorrow!
A huge congratulations goes out to Mrs. Williams, as she was one of the founders and originators of the program. The Crosbyton Lions Club has been a financial supporter of the program since its inception. As a bonus, teachers have noticed an increase in good behavior as a result of the financial literacy project.

The Crosbyton Lions Club met the second Wednesday in December at the Prairie Ladies Inn since the CCPM museum is in the process of being remodeled. Pastor Gary Eggart catered a fabulous brisket and rib meal, and then presented the program. Based on Luke 2, Pastor Gary talked about before Jesus’ birth, there was no room in the inn, and made the comparison to us having room in our hearts to fit Jesus in this holiday season. He mentioned several interruptions that keep us from making room in our hearts and lives for Jesus, and challenged those in attendance to choose to make room for Jesus this holiday season.
Following the program, the club members who were able to stay addressed the Goodfellow cards to members of the community who need help this holiday season. Each card contained a $50 gift card to Lowes which was purchased from the Goodfellows fund, made up of donations from the public. The Lions Club wishes to thank all those who donated to the Goodfellows fund.

There were two wrecks between Lorenzo and Idalou this morning. It was rainy, dark, and cold. There were police, firefighters, and Txdot workers in bright vests directing traffic.
THANK YOU FOR SERVICE!
Pray for their safety and I’m thankful for their servant hearts!

The Crosbyton Lions Club is in its second year of partnering with the third grade at Crosbyton Elementary School for a gardening project. The raised bed garden is located in the former primary building, and the Lions Club purchased equipment for this project. With the approaching cold weather, students and Lions worked quickly to get fall plants in the ground. Representatives from the Lions Club come each week in the morning for one third grade class and in the afternoon for the second class, teaching them about gardening, modeling the instruction after the Master Gardeners Program. Some of the plants that were planted include broccoli, arugula, carrots, Brussel sprouts, kale, spinach, beets, boc choy, and several varieties of lettuce. This is the second year in the program and throughout the year students have studied the composition of seeds, insects, bees, soil science, plant structures, water conservation, and specifically our aquifer. The group is also interested in the importance of bees in cross pollination and have constructed wasp holders. Specific pollinating flowers were planted during warmer months for the bees. A volunteer took care of the plants during the summer vacation.
The students have proved to be eager and engaged and have been sent home with seed packets to experience growing at home. There are about 75% of students who took home the packet that planted them! In addition, the group has a rain barrel to catch the rain. Following the rains in early fall, they now have three goldfish in the rain barrel which eat the larva of mosquitos.
Volunteers from the Lions Club who are conducting the gardening program include Lion Melinda Cagle, Lion Fran Koch, and Lion Jacque James. Local attorney, Matt Brown also volunteers. The group is intendent on demonstrating the connections between good health, nutrition, and home or locally grown foods. These students have sampled spinach leaves, pumpkin seeds, and turnip pieces, thus far this year. By the end of the season they will have sampled many more, some which are totally new to them! The program seems to be successful as students are becoming more aware of food sources,
