The Crosbyton Lions Club is in its second year of partnering with the third grade at Crosbyton Elementary School for a gardening project. The raised bed garden is located in the former primary building, and the Lions Club purchased equipment for this project. With the approaching cold weather, students and Lions worked quickly to get fall plants in the ground. Representatives from the Lions Club come each week in the morning for one third grade class and in the afternoon for the second class, teaching them about gardening, modeling the instruction after the Master Gardeners Program. Some of the plants that were planted include broccoli, arugula, carrots, Brussel sprouts, kale, spinach, beets, boc choy, and several varieties of lettuce. This is the second year in the program and throughout the year students have studied the composition of seeds, insects, bees, soil science, plant structures, water conservation, and specifically our aquifer. The group is also interested in the importance of bees in cross pollination and have constructed wasp holders. Specific pollinating flowers were planted during warmer months for the bees. A volunteer took care of the plants during the summer vacation.
The students have proved to be eager and engaged and have been sent home with seed packets to experience growing at home. There are about 75% of students who took home the packet that planted them! In addition, the group has a rain barrel to catch the rain. Following the rains in early fall, they now have three goldfish in the rain barrel which eat the larva of mosquitos.
Volunteers from the Lions Club who are conducting the gardening program include Lion Melinda Cagle, Lion Fran Koch, and Lion Jacque James. Local attorney, Matt Brown also volunteers. The group is intendent on demonstrating the connections between good health, nutrition, and home or locally grown foods. These students have sampled spinach leaves, pumpkin seeds, and turnip pieces, thus far this year. By the end of the season they will have sampled many more, some which are totally new to them! The program seems to be successful as students are becoming more aware of food sources,
The Crosbyton Lions Club meets the second Wednesday of each month at the Crosby County Pioneer Memorial Museum at noon. The Lions have lunch and an informative program. The Lions motto is, “WE SERVE!” The Lions are always looking for individuals to jump on board and help in this endeavor! Visit next month!
