Here is a little pasty history from Cuyuna Country: A Peoples’ History Volume number 3:
Lunch-pail-sized pasties were a mainstay of miners for many years, and lucky were the men who could count on a child or spouse to deliver one while it was still hot from the oven. The advantage of a meat - rich pie the could be eaten out of hand made them a perfect portable lunch or dinner item. Historically speaking, pasties probably got their start in England as food for tin miners and their families. But on the Cuyuna Range, they rapidly gained popularity among the more than a dozen ethnic groups attracted here from the “Old World” by the work available in the mines
