After 15 years of advocating for the protection and preservation of our public lands encompassing the middle Deschutes River, lower Crooked River, and lower Whychus Creek areas, Friends and Neighbors of the Deschutes Canyon Area (FANs) will be dissolving as a non-profit organization on June 27, 2025.

However, we are pleased to note that several of our key projects will continue to be addressed through the work of the Oregon Natural Desert Association (ONDA), and we are optimistic that our original mission of advocacy, stewardship and education will continue to live on for future generations.

FANs encourages you to become a member of ONDA. You can learn more about their conservation activities at https://onda.org/

Thank you to all who have supported and encouraged us over the years and in so many ways. We are proud of all that we achieved and hope you will continue to speak out for our precious public lands in the high desert of Central Oregon.

With gratitude,
FANs Board of Directors

Dodging raindrops, FANs gathered at MacPherson Park for our Farewell Barbecue Party on May 17. A bittersweet occasion, there were tasty dishes (thanks Al Albin for the delicious pulled pork), musical entertainment provided by Cover Story, and the camaraderie of the many Friends and Neighbors who have supported our organization and our mission over the years.

Sure, it's freezing out there right now, but spring's on its way. Now is a great time to brush up on your native plants, annoying weeds and local birds identification skills. Plus, FANs' popular field guides are on sale at 50 percent off right now. Order your copies today at https://www.fansofdeschutes.org/order-books.html

Barbara Sutton (right) was recognized recently as FANs' 2024 volunteer of the year. Barbara's willingness to help out in numerous ways--from staffing event booths, selling field guides and FANs merchandise, to picking up the mail--has been an invaluable asset to our leadership team. Thank you, Barbara!

Friends and Neighbors (FANs) of the Deschutes Canyon Area

Friends and Neighbors (FANs) of the Deschutes Canyon Area was founded in 2011 by landowners surrounding the Deschutes Canyon-Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area in Central Oregon. We came together over our shared love of nearby public lands, including special places such as Steelhead Falls, Alder Springs, the Peninsula, and Scout Camp.
