Today Senator George Borrello, Senator Cordell Cleare and Senator Michelle Hinchey held the first ever Harlem Farms. This event was held in Harlem at a local park where they displayed Urban Gardening, Farming, Arts & Crafts, Grocery Giveaways, Free New York Samples & more! Various vendors set up interacting with the community to spread awareness about agriculture. We had the opportunity to set up a booth representing New York FFA and the work that we do to prepare future leaders all through agricultural education and leadership. This was an incredible experience connecting with individuals and getting to share all the impacts that FFA has, sharing the importance of investing in our youth. Two of our officers Sage and Tim got to participate in a panel led by the Senators and other panelists, discussing their experience within agriculture and answering questions from their perspectives. This was an incredible experience for us and we’re so thankful for the opportunity to attend, a huge thank you to all those who contributed to making this event possible! What a great way to showcase agriculture especially right here in New York City!

We finished our last day of chapter visits today in NYC. We had the opportunity to visit Mott Haven, a school that’s very interested in FFA. We discussed with students the competitions, conferences and focused heavily on the career preparation. Students in agriculture classes here are spending time on career exploration to see what job opportunities there are, we helped connect some dots with FFA experience and the impact on career readiness. They even are in the process of creating a hydroponics and aquaculture room to add more opportunities to their program! We then headed over to Hart, a chapter that’s been established for a couple of years. These members are really passionate about the whole FFA experience. They’re looking to participate in more events and competitions. We also got to meet a brand new addition to their classroom, a guinea pig! Also, they are in the process of adding a hydroponics and aquaculture room as well! We even had a special guest attend this visit with us, Ms.Dwyer an agricultural teacher from Dewitt Clinton. She’s in the process of chartering a chapter this year so we were so glad we got to connect with her and support her in this journey too. We can’t wait to see all that the future holds for these wonderful chapters and students we were able to connect with. What a great week of touring chapters all across Long Island and NYC, it’s such an eyeopening experience to see agriculture in the city.

Today we were so lucky to have our very own District 1 President, Zoe Picard from the John Bowne FFA chapter tag along with us on our chapter visits. We started off the morning at Queens Academy. They’re working on connecting students with opportunities in FFA that can set them up for future success in career pathways. We got to see a tour of their outdoor garden and greenhouses where all the produce they grow is given back to students and facility to take home. They also have a large chicken coop, with potential of hopefully adding rabbits and other animals or gardening areas in the future. Our next stop for the day was to Murrow, a chapter whose had the opportunity to attend State Convention, conferences and are looking to become more involved. They have a brand new rooftop greenhouse in the processing of being built that has the potential for various SAE projects and hands on learning for students. Our officers also enjoyed getting to view their planetarium, one of few that remain within a school program. These groups we met with were very interested in hearing about the ways they can participate, the background of becoming a State Officer and ways they could get one of the “cool jackets”! Both of these chapters are already doing such valuable work inside their classrooms we can’t wait to see how their FFA programs continue to grow and impact their students.

Today we started off the morning at Brentwood, a chapter in the process of being chartered. We got to sit through 5 different class periods. Discussing opportunities within FFA, career development and projects or fundraisers that could be used within their classroom. They have a super diverse class called craft and cultivate, where they’re able to do all hands on projects in wood working and horticulture. This allows student to have a wide exposure within areas of agriculture. We then headed over to Jericho, a chapter chartered a few years ago. They’ve had a state winner in Agriscience, various additional state competitors, have attended some conferences and are looking for more opportunities as well. We got to meet with the agriculture science and business class, sharing how FFA can set you up in the future with career paths. Students were eager to learn more about our matching outfits we wear, the skills you can develop and how to get involved. Another great day spent seeing all the unique programs that chapters have!

Today we started off at Bridgehampton, a school in the process of being recharted and is full of potential. They have an impressive garden and greenhouse full of a variety of vegetables, fruit, flowers and more. A pollinator garden that contains native plants and an outdoor location for learning or just the environment. They even have a chicken coop right next to their garden too. In addition they’re in the process of starting up hydroponic systems and Sprouts, a farm stand they’ll sell the student grown products in hopes to connect with the community and supply locally. We then headed over to Eastport South Manor, a chapter that was chartered last year. There is a wide variety of curriculum and opportunities that they’re already doing within the classroom. From student ran fish tanks to a research project students are conducting alongside a local lab to investigate the microplastics within marine life in the area. As well as newer projects in the making such as a brand new hydroponic room and a courtyard space with potential for restoring the garden around a koi pond. These chapters both have such agriculturally diverse and thriving classes that we can’t wait to see how this translates into FFA opportunities!

State Officer Tour : New York City Edition!! Three of our State officers started their travels down to the city for a week of chapter visits and an Ag Day in Harlem to finish out the week. To kick us off we stopped at Hudson, while this chapter isn’t chartered yet they are right on track to blooming into an incredibly successful chapter. Already participating in community service, adding a new greenhouse, introducing new animal care classes and learning all the components of FFA. We had the chance to connect with the agricultural students guiding them in what their FFA journey could look like and all the opportunities out there for them. We had a great first day, it’s so inspiring and special to see the start of a program and we can’t wait to see what happens for this excited and eager group of students and ag educator!

We are beyond excited to introduce the 2027 State Convention theme. Our organization starts with “future” and accomplishes it with a commitment to agriculture. That’s exactly what we’re committing to by Cultivating Tomorrow. In order to do that we are going to Reach, Rise and Radiate in areas of agriculture and leadership. We’re excited to see how this theme can be lived out not only at State Convention but through your chapters, communities and everyday lives from now until we kick off the first general session in 214 days!

We’re wrapping up our State Officer Tour today. Our final stop was at the Carrot Barn in Schoharie County, a true local treasure. Currently operated by the New York State Commissioner of Agriculture, Richard Ball and his family. He started off on a small dairy farm growing up and wanted to continue his roots with the carrot farm in order to help bring together the producers and consumers. Providing local and fresh produce to the community. We even had the special guest appearance of Mr.Ball where he spent time connecting with members, showing us a tour of the establishment, and giving a background into the history of his business. We’re so appreciative of all the members who came out to have a delicious brunch with us and for the amazing support that we have from the Commissioner. We’re couldn’t be more thankful for the role that the Department of Agriculture and Markets has within FFA and the connection they provide for our next generation. We have had an amazing week on the road, we’re so thankful for every school, industry tour, and regional event we had the chance to take part in. A whole roughly 1,900 miles later and a lifetime of memories!

We spent our day today at the Big E in Springfield, Massachusetts. Our officers volunteered to assist with different FFA competitions across the fair grounds. These contests were the top placers from teams or individuals that moved on from the state level to then compete at the Big E or Nationals. We were able to cheer on our New York members as they competed. We had top 5 finishes of Extemporaneous Speaking 1st, Milk Quality 1st overall and an additional team with a 5th place individual, Ag Issues 2nd, Creed Speaking 2nd, Dairy Cattle Evaluation 2nd (1st, 3rd and 7th individuals), Dairly Handlers (4th and 9th individuals), Farm Business 3rd (4th and 7th individuals), Horse Evaluation 5th, Prepared Speaking 5th, Tractor Operation 5th and more beyond the top 5. We’re so proud of all the hard work they’ve put into preparing for these contests and for representing New York so well! It was great to see the diversity of agriculture across the Eastern Region as well as connecting with members from states all over. We’re ready to head back to New York tomorrow for our final day of State Officer Tour at the Carrot Barn!
