Today we celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
We invite you to join us Saturday at 8am for a FREE community event! No registration required! The Crete Community Runners Association will lead a 2 mile walk for Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom. Please meet at Heritage Park at 7:30am.
Local Connection: Crete & the Underground Railroad
Right here in Crete, history lives on. Caroline Quarlls, a young freedom seeker, found refuge here on her path to freedom. In 2018, the National Park Service recognized the Crete Cemetery and Crete Congregational Church at 550 W. Exchange St.—which you'll pass on the Freedom Walk—as a significant site in the history of the Underground Railroad, now eligible for the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
As you walk, may you reflect on the legacy of freedom, justice, and the continued journey toward equity.
