Each year the Creswell VFW Post 4039 and it's Auxiliary participates in the National VFW Student Scholarship Essay/Speech program. This year the entries for the high school Voice of Democracy Scholarship program and for the 9 students who entered the middle school Patriot Pen essay program. This year the winner for the Voice of Democracy was Emily Krauss from Pleasant Hill HS; her speech is currently being judged with other post winners in the District contest, as the winners move on next to state and then national judging. Patriots Pen first place winner was Bella Malekzadeh from Pleasant Hill Middle School; second place went to Sarah Trout, Creswell M.S. with third place going to Mikenzie Eckburg, also from Creswell M.S. With this many entries, the Creswell Post was able to assist the Cottage Grove and Veneta Posts allowing several of our students another opportunity to win. Parker Russell from Creswell M.S. won the Patriot Pen contest for the Veneta post, and students from Creswell won all three Patriot Pen positions in Cottage Grove. The winner is Sophie Seim, second place is Hunter Lowell, and third place is Pierce Wilnau.
The Teacher of the Year for the Creswell post was Kathryn Holst from Creswell Middle School. The Creswell VFW Post is grateful for the continued support of Emily Tierney from the Chronicle, Nick Caum from the Creswell Library as judges, and welcomes our new judge, RuthAnn Seim from the Creswell Chamber of Commerce.
Rick Higgins, Past Commander, VFW Department of Oregon, also presented the Creswell Post with it’s 75thAnniversary plaque. This plaque was initially planned for presentation in March, 2020, but COVID delayed the presentation.
