When John was at the Naval Academy, they taught him a little rule of etiquette Iโve always loved:
If someone asks you to pass the salt, you donโt send it off alone. You pass the salt and the pepper. They belong together.
After 41 years of marriage, that makes us smile.
Look at themโthe salt dressed in white, the pepper dressed in black. Bride and groom. And there they sitโฆside by side.
But maybe thereโs a little marriage lesson hiding in those shakers.
Salt and pepper are different. Each brings something different to the table. But together, they make things better.
Scripture says,
We werenโt meant to live two separate lives that occasionally intersect. God calls a husband and wife to become one flesh (Genesis 2:24)โtwo different people, bringing different strengths, personalities, gifts and perspectives into one shared life.
So when life gets passed around the tableโthe adventures, the ordinary days, raising kids, hard seasons, celebrations, growing olderโgo together.
Stay close.
Do life side by side.
Bring out the best in each other.
Because sometimes the mix of you + me really does make life taste better.

And apparently, even the salt and pepper know it.
