City of Crestview Mayor JB Whitten Appointed to National Veterans Cemetery Steering Committee by Congressman Patronis

Crestview, FL – The City of Crestview is proud to announce that Mayor JB Whitten, a retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sergeant, and native of New Hampshire, where he grew up and attended school in Epping, as Jerry B. Whitten has been appointed to serve on the newly established National Veterans Cemetery Steering Committee. This committee was formed to support the proposal for a new National Veterans Cemetery in Okaloosa County, making sure that local veterans and their families have a dignified final resting place close to home.

“Northwest Florida has a long history of answering our nation’s call to serve,” said Congressman Jimmy Patronis. “Our veterans deserve a final resting place that reflects the honor and sacrifice of their service. A national cemetery in Okaloosa County would ensure those who wore the uniform can be laid to rest with the dignity they’ve earned.”

The new advisory committee will review possible site locations, including orphan parcels located on Eglin Air Force Base, with roughly 200 acres planned for the cemetery. A team of community leaders have been appointed to help guide the research and planning for the project. The National Veterans Cemetery Steering Committee will begin its work in September and engage crucial stakeholders to provide input and support for the project.

The steering committee will be co-chaired by Brigadier General Fran Hendricks, USAF (Ret.), and the Hon. Graham W. Fountain, retired Okaloosa County Commissioner, State Police Colonel, and Honorary Commander of the 492nd Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field. Mayor JB Whitten is one of 20 appointed community leaders in Northwest Florida.
