Lamrim Teachings: Volume I
Foundations of the Path
By Bhiksuni Thubten Chodron

Lamrim foundations and preliminary practices, plus teachings on precious human life. This freely distributed ebook contains lightly edited transcripts of lamrim teachings given by Venerable Chodron.

In this first volume, Venerable Chodron introduces the gradual path to enlightenment and lays out the fundamentals needed for the initial, intermediate and advanced scope practices covered in subsequent volumes. She makes the point early on that western students are often missing the Buddhist world view, well-known in the Tibetan, Chinese, and Indian cultures, and this hampers westerners when learning the lamrim the way it is traditionally taught. For this reason, she is careful to fill in pre-supposed knowledge on topics such as rebirth, karma, and different life forms and universes.

Beyond Desire & Passion
The Buddha’s Training for Freedom
By Thanissaro Bhikkhu

Ven. Sāriputta once proposed introducing the Buddha’s teachings to intelligent foreigners by saying, “Our teacher teaches the subduing of desire and passion.” This book explores the implications of taking this sentence as a starting point for understanding the Dhamma.

The main purpose of attending teachings is to generate a specific effort within the flow of your own mind—an effort that disrupts its usual momentum. Without this, your mind would simply continue in its habitual direction. If, after listening to the teachings, no change has taken place in you, then even if you listened with great attention and the instructions were very profound, they have not planted any virtuous seeds in your mindstream.

Consider this analogy: to check whether your face is dirty, you need a mirror; only then can you wipe away any grime. In the same way, you should listen to the Dharma in order to recognize the defilements present in your mind, by examining your mind and your conduct in the mirror of the Dharma. When you see them clearly, you will feel a pang of conscience and think, "This is what my mind has become!" And that recognition will give rise to a strong determination to rid yourself of these afflictions at any cost.

As it is said in the Jatakas:

When in the pure mirror of the Dharma
I see the reflection of my misdeeds,
My mind is filled with awe and dismay—
May I immediately turn to the Dharma!

The spiritual path is not an attempt to reach paradise or to become some kind of superhuman. It is a process of ruthlessly exposing our own illusions.

When you stop believing in the drama that your mind constantly plays out, you finally find freedom.

Dr. Dr Rachel Zoffness shares a key method to help you become free from emotional and physical pain.

08/23/2026

Did you ever realize that chronic pain has a recipe? Dr. Rachel Zoffness shares how the nervous system gets stuck in high alert, it starts scanning the body for danger, amplifying small sensations into urgent warning signs. That internal alarm loop can turn ordinary signals into chronic pain, and once you understand how it works, the whole experience of pain starts to look very different.

Practice doesn’t have to stop when life starts
I’ve come to believe this:

Formal sitting matters.

But the real work is what happens in the spaces between.

While speaking.
While cooking.
While eating.

While doing the ordinary things that make up most of a day.
If practice only exists on the cushion, it can’t carry us very far.

What’s been most helpful for me is simple:
before anything - before class, before teaching, before listening, before work - I try to generate bodhicitta.

Then at the end, I dedicate the merit.

It turns the day into dozens of small sessions.

That habit started years ago when a teacher told me to do the same thing every time I sat down to study in Nepal. I was busy, tired, and buried in classes and homework.

But that advice changed everything.

Over time, it became less about “finding time to practice” and
more about making practice continuous.

Not perfect.
Not polished.

Just present enough to interrupt the hurricane of confusion, again and again. Maybe that’s the point.

Hear the rest:

Your meditation might be doing less than you think if it stops when...
