HCCA is an environmental advocacy organization that collaborates with local stakeholders and policymakers, applies sound science, educates, and upholds the environmental laws affecting our community. We recognize that environmental sustainability is the key to a healthy economy. We advocate for protection along the high alpine tundra of the Raggeds Wilderness and Collegiates, past the steep cliffs of the Black Canyon, from the North Fork of the Gunnison River’s rolling scrub oak hills and aspen groves, to the rushing waters of the Lake Fork. Our work ensures these iconic public lands and waters will be healthy for generations to come.

Thank you to all our hardworking volunteers who joined us last Saturday for the Working Lands Irrigation Project!

Together, we installed 700 feet of pipe and 372 control gates, helping improve water efficiency, reduce labor, and support recreation, wildlife habitat, and the valley’s agricultural heritage. 💧🌱

A BIG shoutout to our project partners, the Crested Butte Land Trust, and our generous project sponsors: the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District for providing materials and The Crested Butte Deli for keeping our crew fueled with lunch! 🙌

🎉 Public Lands Palooza is back! 🎉

Join HCCA at Zuni West Brewing in CB South on Saturday, September 19, starting at 4 PM for our 2nd Annual Public Lands Palooza!

We’re celebrating our shared love for public lands with: door prize drawings, free drinks for our summer volunteers, and live music by Coal Creek Connection. 🎶

Thank you to all our volunteers who joined us last Saturday, August 29, in partnership with the Town of Crested Butte for a full day of wetland restoration on Town Ranch! 💧🌿

With your help, we treated approximately 700 feet of ditch by repairing 16 attenuation structures, building 3 new structures, and constructing 1 post-assisted log structure. Volunteers also collectively walked numerous miles to transport materials, including locally sourced willows and salvaged wood that was otherwise bound for the landfill. 💪

We are one week away from the Working Lands Irrigation Project, in partnership with the Crested Butte Land Trust and Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District! 🌿💧

The U.S. Forest Service has proposed rescinding the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule. The public comment period is now open and comments are due by September 21, 2026.

For 25 years, roadless protections have helped keep some of the U.S.’ most treasured backcountry intact, and here in the Gunnison Country, we understand the value of untouched landscapes better than most. Join us in this advocacy effort! 📣 💪
