Is an advanced or expert hike right for you? Here is what you need to know:

🌸 Overview:
Plan on traveling 5-8 miles (or more) on steep, often rocky terrain, and expect some off-trail hiking across talus slopes. Footing can be tricky, and many of these hikes include creek/river crossings and travel across narrow, exposed areas near cliffs/drop-offs. Elevation gain/loss can exceed 1,500 vertical feet (very steep!).

🌸 Ability:
Expert hikes are suitable for people who are very physically fit and who
incorporate running, cycling, or other strenuous exercise into their schedule regularly. You should be comfortable traveling at a pace of 3 miles/hour... uphill!

**These hikes are not suitable for anyone with medical issues that prevent them from exerting themselves or who have a history of altitude sickness when traveling to mountain areas.

**If you have traveled to Crested Butte from sea level, it is recommended that you spend at least 24 hours in Crested Butte before your event departure time to acclimate to the altitude change.

🌸 Gear:
🌱 Sturdy hiking BOOTS
🌱 Complete rain gear (jacket & pants)
🌱 Sunscreen
🌱 Bug spray
🌱 Hat
🌱 2 liters of water
🌱 Substantial snacks & lunch
🌱 Hiking poles recommended
🌱 **Read event descriptions carefully to learn if sandals/river shoes are required

Online registration is now open to the public! Check out the 2026 Program Guide on our website (CrestedButteWildflowerFestival.org) for a full lineup of our summer events. We look forward to seeing you this summer for our 40th Anniversary Festival, July 10-19, 2026!

Bees love wildflowers. 🌼 Greenhouses love bees. 🐝 That’s why Growing Spaces encourages planting pollinator gardens around greenhouses — helping attract bees and support healthy growing ecosystems. Designed and built for the Rocky Mountains, the Growing Dome works best when it’s part of the landscape, not separate from it.

✨Event Highlight: Discoveries Along the D**e Trail with Luke Tembrock ✨

This intermediate-advanced trip will begin with a focus on higher-altitude flora, including lupines, various sunflower family species, and buttercup family species. As the trail progresses downwards in elevation, we will examine the plants and flowers associated with the several south-facing parks and the scree plants found adjacent to the trail’s namesake – an intrusive igneous d**e. Thereafter, the focus will be on the plants associated with aspen forests (one of the largest in North America) as the trail winds down to a glacial bench. The trip will conclude with a final look around the large, open meadow at Horse Ranch Park.

Please Note: event time includes 30-min drive to the trailhead; we will drop cars at Horse Ranch Park and carpool to the start, then reverse at the end. Please plan on using your vehicle.

🌱 Snacks
🌱 At least 16 ounces of water

Online registration is now open to the public! Check out the 2026 Program Guide on our website (CrestedButteWildflowerFestival.org) for a full lineup of our summer events. We look forward to seeing you this summer for our 40th Anniversary Festival, July 10-19, 2026!
