The Cove cleanup, by the numbers! 💥

Thanks again to everyone who came out for the Cove cleanup on October 3!

We were fortunate to have 40 volunteers show up to help keep the Cove looking beautiful and healthy. And you know what? They collected 191 pounds of garbage, and 840 pounds of wood. Over a half ton in total!

Did you miss out on the cleanup? Well, the next one will be in April. But you can help support the Cove and Park in the meantime by making a donation to the EWPA. Every dollar helps!

🌿 Keeping Stillhouse Cove healthy takes year-round work!

Before last month’s nor’easter, EWPA planted 54+ native warm-season grasses to strengthen vulnerable slopes, control erosion, and protect sensitive areas from foot traffic.

🌹 Three new roses were also added to the Palmieri Rose Garden, first planted in 2019. Stop by and smell the roses!

💧 And along Narragansett Boulevard, EWPA recently repaired the infiltration area, a natural filter for stormwater flowing toward the bay. It helps capture bacteria, organisms, trash, and plastics before they reach Stillhouse Cove, protecting the Cove from pollution and harmful blooms. After two weeks of repairs and reseeding, the system performed well during recent heavy rains.

Small projects. Big impact. That’s stewardship. ❤️

What a wonderful fall Cove cleanup this past Saturday! 🍁

Thanks to all of the volunteers who showed up to help collect all sorts of debris. It really takes a village, as they say!

The Edgewood Waterfront Preservation Association organizes two cleanups each year, in the spring in fall. If you were unable to join us last weekend, hopefully you can do so in April. But in the meantime, let’s enjoy spooky season! 🎃 👻

How does Stillhouse Cove and Park stay looking so beautiful? 🧐

Well, the City of Cranston certainly helps, mowing the grass and emptying the garbage bins. Your tax dollars at work. 😃

Then there are volunteers, who help remove bottles, cans and all other manner of refuse from the Cove during our spring and fall cleanups. Oh, that’s right! The annual International Coast Cleanup takes place on Saturday, October 3, 9-11am. Come lend a hand, registration link in our bio!

But also, the Edgewood Waterfront Preservation Association (EWPA) pays to maintain the landscaping, so the various flower beds/gardens always look as lovely as can be. And we keep the doggie waste bag dispensers well-stocked (we supply ~15K bags/year!). And we’re able to do so thanks to donations from our neighbors and supporters just like you. 🙏

Overall, as they say, it takes a village!

Since its beginning, more than 18 million volunteers have collected more than 380 million pounds of trash.

Why “Stillhouse”, part 2: the remembrance bench.

In the 18th century, distilleries along Narragansett Bay produced rum from Caribbean molasses cultivated by enslaved people. That rum was shipped to West Africa and traded for more enslaved people. Barrels for the trade were manufactured right here in Pawtuxet Village.

The Cove’s history also connects to the HMS Gaspee. Its 1792 burning is remembered as an early act of resistance to British rule, but the story is more complicated: some of its prominent leaders were also involved in the slave trade.

For years, neighbors, academics, and activists worked to ensure this history would be recognized and remembered.

On Juneteenth 2026, the Stillhouse Cove Remembrance Project (SCRP), in partnership with the Edgewood Waterfront Preservation Association (EWPA) and the City of Cranston, unveiled a black marble remembrance bench designed by Jheneire Loreus. A procession took place from Broad Street down to Stillhouse Cove where a large number of people gathered for a speaking program and the official dedication of the remembrance bench, which reads:

“This cove — named for a rum distillery or “stillhouse” — produced rum to fuel the violent capture and sale of enslaved Africans. We honor those who suffered and acknowledge this land’s role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.”

What’s this? 🤔

At last fall’s International Coastal Cleanup, an EWPA board member (ahem, me) found this bottle in the muck, fully intact. “Citrate of Magnesium”. A fellow volunteer who I donated this to, did a little research, and this was used to treat stomach discomfort, and the bottle itself dates to 1926. Ninety-nine years lying in the cove! So, there’s certainly garbage to be collected, but treasure & history to be found as well. (Bonus photo, a large piece of glass with the date “1956” on it, also found that day).
