short answer: YES. 👀

Even if you don’t expect to receive need-based aid, completing the FAFSA can still be important. Your FAFSA information may be used to determine eligibility for certain types of federal, state, and school-based aid - and some colleges require it for certain scholarships or aid programs.

So before you decide to skip it… make sure you know what you could be missing. 👻

Your counselor may be amazing. They may also have approximately 7,000 other things on their to-do list. 😅

If you’re asking for a recommendation, a transcript, or other application materials, don’t wait until the deadline is breathing down your neck.

Know your deadlines, ask early and find out what your counselor needs from you. Common App recommends requesting recommendation letters at least 3 weeks before the deadline, and students can track the progress of their recommendation and transcript through their application.

Basically: your counselor can help you a lot more when they have time to help you.

Your school portal is basically the control center… so maybe don’t let that little notification badge sit there for three months. 👀

Before classes start, take a few minutes to explore your portal and find your important dates, required tasks, financial aid information, class details and other updates from your school.

And if you’re an incoming freshman, make checking your portal part of your routine now. Schools may use it to communicate important next steps, deadlines and information you need before starting.
