The Justice Assistance Family offers its heartfelt congratulations to Chief Judge Jeanne E. LaFazia on her well-earned retirement!

Chief Judge LaFazia spent her career transforming Rhode Island’s justice system through innovation, compassion, and collaboration. She was appointed to the Rhode Island District Court in 2002 and became the first woman to serve as chief of the Rhode Island District Court in 2010. In that role, she led efforts to make the courts more accessible and effective, pioneering problem-solving approaches that address the root causes of recidivism.

Chief LaFazia truly saw the District Court as the People’s Court. She also expanded access to justice through community partnerships, mediation programs, and housing assistance initiatives for self-represented litigants.

Chief Judge LaFazia’s legacy is defined by her commitment to a more compassionate, community-centered judiciary and her lasting impact on countless individuals, families, and communities across Rhode Island.

We are proud to recognize Victoria M. Almeida for her extraordinary contributions to the legal profession, public service, and the Rhode Island community. As a seasoned attorney and Vice Chairperson of the Rhode Island Parole Board, Victoria has devoted decades to advancing justice, ethical leadership, and public service.

A trailblazer in Rhode Island's legal community, Victoria was the first woman appointed Assistant Executive Counsel to a governor and has served in numerous leadership roles throughout her distinguished career. She is also a respected lecturer, author, and advocate whose commitment to service has earned recognition from both civic and professional organizations, including having the Victoria M. Almeida Servant Leader Award established in her honor by the Rhode Island Bar Association.

Through her extensive work with charitable, educational, and community organizations, Victoria has made a lasting impact on countless Rhode Islanders. We are honored to celebrate her remarkable legacy of leadership, service, and dedication to justice.
